Thursday is here once again, and NFL fans are starting to get nervous as the league’s conference championship weekend inches closer.
Some fans may still be holding out hope that the league will have some sort of “Thursday Night Football” showcase for them before those contests.
Unfortunately, they’ll have to wait until Sunday to see some NFL action, as “Thursday Night Football” is over for the 2023 NFL season.
Here’s everything you need to know about the NFL’s postseason schedule and when “TNF” will return to our screens.
Is there a ‘Thursday Night Football’ game tonight?
There will be no “Thursday Night Football” game on Jan. 25, or for the rest of the 2024 NFL playoffs, for that matter. The show ended in Week 17 and won’t return until Week 2 of the 2024 NFL regular season.
The NFL has added one “Monday Night Football” game to its schedule in recent postseasons, and two were played in 2024 because the Bills-Steelers game was postponed; it seems unlikely that the league will schedule a Thursday game at any point.
Because? Because it wouldn’t give the teams playing Thursday’s game enough time to prepare. That would put some already banged-up teams at a greater disadvantage, and could be detrimental to players trying to overcome injuries in a short week.
The final “Thursday Night Football” game of the year was played between the Browns and Jets in Week 17. Joe Flacco led Cleveland to a 37-20 victory in a game during which he threw for 309 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Sports on television today
There will be no football on Thursday night once the college football season ends. Perhaps the United Football League (UFL), made up of the now merged USFL and XFL, will schedule a game on Thursday at some point, but it won’t start playing until March.
The good news for sports fans is that there is a lot of basketball on TV on Thursdays, so you can choose between enjoying one of the NBA games that night or watching one of the college games. That includes a highly anticipated matchup between Dawn Staley’s South Carolina team and Kim Mulkey’s LSU team.
Below is a summary of what will air in the regular “TNF” timeslot on Thursday:
- NBA: Celtics at Heat (7:30 p.m. ET, TNT); Reyes on Warriors (10 p.m. ET, TNT)
- NCAAM: SMU at North Texas (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2); San Francisco at Gonzaga (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2)
- NCAAW: South Carolina at LSU (8 p.m. ET, ESPN)
- TENNIS: Australian Open 2024 (10 p.m. ET, ESPN)
