Lionel Messi and Inter Miami look to defend their Leagues Cup title in 2024 as the competition enters its second year of existence.
The Leagues Cup debuted in 2023, when Major League Soccer and Liga MX clubs took a break from domestic league action to play a knockout competition against each other.
Messi helped the Leagues Cup explode onto the American soccer scene, leading Inter Miami to its first trophy while making its club debut in the competition and pushing the team to win the silver medal in dramatic fashion.
Now, details for the 2024 competition have been released, as the two North American leagues have teamed up to modify the format and layout of the tournament in response to criticism.

As was the case in 2023, all Leagues Cup matches throughout the tournament will be broadcast on MLS Season Pass for all subscribers around the world.
In the United States, some games will air on FOX Sports, while TSN and RDS will have select games on television in Canada. For those games, FOX and FS1 are available to stream on Fubo United Stateswhile TSN and RDS are available to broadcast on Canada.
There will also be Spanish-language broadcasts of select matches in the US, with that channel also available on fubo.
Leagues Cup 2024 calendar and format
The 2024 Leagues Cup will run largely as it did in its inaugural 2023 season, with some format adjustments.
As was the case in its first year, all 47 teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico (29 from MLS and 18 from Liga MX) will participate in the tournament, first playing a group stage before a 32-team playoffs. The group determines the eventual winner.
The group stage consists of 45 teams, and the previous year’s league champions from both leagues, Columbus Crew and Club America, earned a bye to the knockout round. All other clubs were organized into 15 groups of three through a selection process that included sorting clubs into three tiers and creating groups with one club from each tier, taking into account geographic proximity.
The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knockout round, and all group matches will be played for 90 minutes. Three points are awarded for a win and one point for a draw, but with an additional twist: all matches that end in a tie go to a penalty shootout, where the winner earns an additional point, just like in the NHL.
Once the knockout round is established, play continues as usual in single-elimination competition until a winner is crowned, with a spot in next year’s CONCACAF Champions Cup at stake.

Group stage
The group stage of the Leagues Cup 2024 features 15 groups of three teams each, divided by East and West, drawn up taking into account geographical proximity.
Each group will be played at a single location, hosted by the highest-ranked MLS team in the group, with the exception of groups that include a Liga MX club with hub rights.

Elimination phase
A new feature of Leagues Cup 2024 is the “hub” system to provide deserving Liga MX clubs with a smoother travel burden. Liga MX’s highest-ranking clubs in the Leagues Cup tiering system receive “hosting rights” through various stages of the knockout bracket, and are designated with a “host city” that allows the club to avoid traveling to certain point in case you go further in the knockout round.
Club América has “center” rights until the semifinal, Monterrey has “center” rights until the round of 16, Chivas has “center” rights until the round of 32 and Tigres has “center” rights for the group stage. Each club will be designated a city in which it can stay during its peak period before having to travel to the home city of a potential MLS opponent.
