Whether you are trying to determine the compatibility of software or replacement components, it is important to know the age of your computer. Technology tends to advance faster than expected, typically rendering a large number of older computers obsolete.

How to know how old your computer is

If you want to know how to tell how old your computer is, we’ll give you some of the easiest ways, no matter what platform you’re on.

Checking serial numbers and manufacturer stickers

Unless you build a computer from scratch using separately purchased components, the entire machine generally has the same manufacturing dates. Most, if not all, computer manufacturers will have the manufacturing dates of their components somewhere on the outside of the machine. This helps identify the batch of computer leaving the factory, which can be compared to any known defects in the batch.

Typically, these dates are placed on the serial number label, since the serial number also immediately identifies the model and make of the machine. If a date is not clearly indicated, the serial number itself may contain a manufacturing date code. If you can find your computer’s serial number or QR code, write it down or scan the QR code. You can then go to the manufacturer’s website to see if you can identify the computer’s manufacturing date from the serial number.

This process can also be used to identify the manufacturing date of inpidual parts if the computer was built from scratch. This is useful if you want to upgrade inpidual parts and not replace the entire computer.

Please note that you should never remove the serial number label to attempt to register the code. Many manufacturers will void the warranty if the serial number label is removed. You may also need the serial number again in the future, and if you forget to put the tag back on, you could lose it. Write it down or take a quick digital photo. Never take it off.

How to know how old your Windows 10 PC is

If the serial number does not contain a manufacturing date, or the manufacturer’s website cannot provide a date using the serial number alone, you have alternatives. If you are using a Windows 10 PC, you can find all the relevant information using the Windows System Information command. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows search bar. If you don’t have the magnifying glass icon on the taskbar, you can find it by right-clicking on the taskbar, hovering over Look forand then choosing the icon or search box.

  5. Another date you can use, unless you recently installed a new operating system, is the operating system installation date. This indicates the day your current operating system was installed. It may not indicate the exact age of your computer, but for a rough estimate, it means that your machine cannot have been manufactured after the operating system installation date. (That is unless you have changed the hard drive or installed a new drive where the operating system resides.)

It’s good to note that although you can search for and run systeminfo.exe from the search bar without opening the command, it will close immediately afterward. The command itself does not have a pause to display the information, so you will need the command prompt window to be able to view the data.

How to know how old your Chromebook is

As with all computer hardware, the easiest way to find out the manufacturing date of a machine is to check the date on the serial numbers. If the date isn’t listed, or the manufacturer’s website doesn’t have that information, you can make an educated guess using the Chromebook’s system settings.

The Chromebook is quite unique because the operating system has an expiration date. It doesn’t mean that the machine itself will stop working when that date arrives, but it does mean that it will stop receiving update support. This is important since the Chromebook is almost entirely dependent on Google’s online services to function properly. If it is no longer updated, compatibility errors can make the machine unusable.

Different Chromebook models may contain different data, but if you want to know the specifications of your Chromebook, you can do the following:

  1. On your Chromebook, open a New Tab, type “chrome://system” and then press Get into.

How to Find Out How Old Your Dell Computer Is

Dell has its own dedicated support website to determine the manufacturing date and warranty support date for your model. This involves finding the Dell Service Tag for the particular computer you are using.

  • If you are using a desktop model, this service label is usually located on the top, side, or back of the case.
  • If you are using an all-in-one computer, it is on the bottom back of the case or stand.
  • If you have a Dell laptop, the Dell Service Tag will be on the bottom, battery case, or on the keyboard or palm rest.

Once the service tag is located, it’s time to find out the age of the computer.

How to tell how old your HP computer is

HP records the manufacturing date of its PCs as a code in the serial number. At least this is how it is done for those manufactured from 2010 to 2019. The manufacturing date is hidden in the 4th5thand 6th numbers in the serial number code. For example, if these three numbers are 234, then your PC was manufactured on the 34th.th week of 2012. This trend will likely continue for newly created computers, as most of them do not tend to remain in use after a decade.

However, if you have an older HP computer, it may be best to contact HP for the manufacturing date if the serial code does not provide an exact number. You can find the serial code on the outer casing or by using HP Support Assistant. You can open HP Support Assistant by typing it in the search box on the Windows taskbar.

Calling the manufacturer

If your particular manufacturer does not offer a serial search option on their website, it may be best to call their support hotline. They keep records of the manufacturing dates of their products and will usually have that information on hand. Check your product manual or manufacturer’s website for support numbers.

A simple process

Whatever your reason for checking the age of your computer, it’s actually a simple process as long as you know what steps to take. However, depending on your computer model or operating system, this may involve simply typing the correct commands or it may be as inconvenient as having to call the manufacturer of your product.
