After much confusion and reporting, the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup will go ahead as the country’s oldest soccer competition continues unabated in its 109th all-time edition.
Only eight senior Major League Soccer clubs will participate, while another 11 will be represented by their MLS NEXT Pro youth teams. The agreement was reached to have partial participation in the top flight after Major League Soccer threatened to withdraw all their clubs as they seek to face the delivery of the Leagues Cup as part of the league’s regular calendar.
As a result, lower league clubs have never had a better chance to emerge with a historic Cup title since the inception of MLS in 1996. Since then, only two lower league clubs have won the US Open Cup crown. .USA, the last being the now defunct Rochester Rhinos in 1999.

All US Open Cup 2024 matches will be broadcast for fans to see, as US Soccer hopes to increase the visibility of the tournament and show MLS that it can be sustainable in the future.
Full broadcast details for the entire tournament have yet to be announced, but it was revealed that all First and Second Round matches will be streamed on the official US Soccer, Major League Soccer and USL websites. Likely as the later rounds roll around, US Soccer will rely on its rights deal with Turner Sports for much of the tournament coverage.
The idea of this is to give greater visibility to the matches of the lower league teams and at the same time enjoy the possibility of generating surprises.
2024 US Open Cup schedule, fixtures and schedule
For the first time since 2008, the US Open Cup will be formatted so that the First Round consists exclusively of matchups between professional teams against amateur clubs. Expanding on that concept further, all MLS clubs will be forced to play lower league opponents until that is no longer possible due to other restrictions.
