How to disable the camera in Windows 10
If you want to disable the camera in Windows 10, you can disable it completely or for some apps. This is wonderful for allowing users to have more power over how their cameras interact with their apps. This also helps users maintain better control over their computer security.
Turn off the camera for all applications
Windows 10 will allow you to disable the camera completely. No app will have access to it and you won’t be able to gain access until you re-enable the camera. Follow these steps to turn off the camera for all apps:
- Right click on the Windows Start button. In the menu that appears, select “Device Manager.”
- A new window will open. Select the arrow next to “Imaging Devices” to expand the menu.
- Right click on your camera name and select “Disable Device.”
- In the confirmation box, click “Yes.”
Once you click “Yes”, the camera will be completely disabled. If you are not sure if the camera is turned off, restart your computer to make sure the change is made.
Turn off the camera for selected apps
If you need more control over the camera than disabling it completely, follow the steps below. These instructions will help you turn off the camera for specific apps while giving it access to others.
- Click the Start menu and then choose “Settings.”
- Select “Privacy.” A window will appear. In the left menu, find “Camera” and click on it.
- Find the setting marked “Allow apps to access your camera” and turn on the switch.
- In the p titled “Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera,” you’ll see a list of apps. Disable the app option if you do not want the app to access your camera.
Remember that if you disable camera access in your web browser, you will also disable access to any website you may use. It’s a good idea to restart your computer to make sure the settings take effect.
How to disable the camera in Windows 11
Windows 11 also allows users to turn off their cameras. Users can choose to disable some apps or disable the camera completely. With the upgrade to Windows 11, setup has become even easier than in Windows 10.
Turn off the camera for all applications
To turn off the camera for all applications on your computer, follow the instructions below. No apps can access the camera until you turn the settings back on.
- Press the Start button and then click “Settings.” If you can’t find “Settings”, press Windows + I.
- Click “Bluetooth & Devices” and then “Cameras.”
- Find the “Connected Cameras” list and select “Integrated Webcam.”
- Below the webcam preview, click “Disable.”
- A confirmation box will appear. Press “Yes.”
The camera must be disabled. However, you can restart your computer to ensure that the settings have been configured correctly.
Turn off the camera for selected apps
Many users only need to disable the camera for certain applications and not all. In this case, Windows 11 allows you to quickly find and configure access to only the necessary applications. Follow the instructions below to turn off the camera for selected apps:
- Press the Home button and then “Settings.” Press Windows + I if you can’t find the app in your pinned apps list.
- Select “Privacy and Security” in the left panel.
- Scroll down to the “App Permissions” p and then click “Camera.”
- Look at the “Camera Access” option and make sure the option is activated.
- Then turn on the “Allow apps to access your camera” setting. Below there will be a list of applications. Turn each app’s settings on or off as you see fit.
Remember that disabling your browser’s access to your camera also disables camera access for all websites. Restart your computer to ensure the settings are saved correctly.
No cameras please
While we may all want to disable our webcams completely, this may not always be an option. Windows makes disabling the camera on an app-by-app basis a very easy process.
