How to delete a Discord chat

The ability to delete a Discord chat is one of the platform’s most requested features. However, after years of requests, we still can’t effortlessly delete old chats or mass delete newer ones. However, there are options and this article will guide you through them.

Cleaning is one of your main tasks if you manage a Discord channel. You can take the time to manage each channel or use bots to help. This article will help you delete chats as part of your administrative role.

Delete Discord chat manually

Cleaning a chat manually is the long and tedious way to clean a Discord chat. However, it gives you much more control over what is deleted. The manual deletion method is appropriate if you have some valuable conversations that you want to keep for a while longer.

Here’s what you can do to delete a chat using Discord’s built-in deletion process.

1. Navigate to the channel you want to delete.

   

2. Locate the message you want to delete and click the three-dot menu on the right. Or hold down the Shift key.

   

3. Click the red trash icon to delete the message. Or click Delete message.

   

4. A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm the deletion. Click Delete.
   

As you can see, it is not easy to delete messages en masse using the platform’s native features. Fortunately, there are easier methods to delete all messages from your channels.

Delete Discord chat with a bot

By far the easiest way to clean your channel is to use a bot. There are bots for everything on Discord and they are perfect for menial tasks, like deleting chats. There are some chatbots, but one of the most common is the robot mee6.

To add a bot to Discord, you will need to be an administrator or have Manage Server permissions in your role. If you don’t, you won’t be able to add any bots. To check if you have permissions, do this:

1. Select the server where you are adding a bot.
   
2. Click Server configuration from the right menu (the arrow to the right of your server name).
   
3. Select Roles and make sure Administrator or Manage Roles is enabled. You may need to click Default Permissions at the top to find the administrator roles.
   

If you don’t see Server configuration or you can’t toggle Administrator or Manage Server, you don’t have enough permissions, and you need to talk to the server owner. You can add the bot if you have permissions and one of those settings is enabled.

Add the robot

For this article, we will use the Mee6 bot. This versatile and reliable bot can perform many administrative tasks in Discord, including cleaning up a chat.

To add the bot, do this:

1. Go to this website and select Add to discord (Keep this page open.)
   
2. Log in to your Discord account.
   
3. Select the server you want to delete.
   
4. Authorize the bot for that server.
   
5. Return to the MEE6 website.
   
6. Select the server you just added it to in the top right corner. If it is not already selected, click the Moderator option and click Yeah When requested.
   
7. Go back to your server and write !clear, !clear10either !clear100. Whatever is most appropriate.
   

You can also delete people’s chats if necessary. Cleaning a chat by the user is useful if someone has become toxic or posted a bunch of messages that no one wants to see. Use the command ‘!clear @[NAME]’ to clean up the previous hundred messages from users.

Delete Discord chat by cloning and closing

If the bot doesn’t do enough for you, it is possible to clone a server and shut down the original. That way you keep your users and settings but get rid of chat history and clutter. It’s a complicated way to clear the chat, but it works. You can manually clone your server or use a bot.

To manually clone a server, do this:

1. Select the server you want to clone in Discord.
2. Open the Server configuration.
   
3. From the left side menu, select Server Template.
   
4. Enter a name for your template and click Generate template.
   
5. Click on the Preview template that appears below your template link.
   
6. Select Create.
   
7. When you exit the settings menu, your new server will be in your server list.
   
8. Delete the original server.

You can also use a bot to do this, if you prefer. There are a couple of bots available that will clone servers. DiscordServerCloner on GitHub It comes highly recommended. The bot will save a copy on your server for you to retrieve as needed.

Whichever method you use, you’ll need to re-add the bots you had on your original server, but everything else should be just the way you like it.

Of all of them, chat authorization bots are probably the easiest. They’re limited in that they can only clear chat from the previous 14 days, but they make the job of clearing chat and doing some general housekeeping simple. If you are lucky enough to have an active server, we highly recommend having one of these bots anyway.

Can I remove someone from the server?

How do I delete all messages in a Discord DM?

Unlike servers, you cannot add bots to Discord DMs (private messages). This leaves us in the unfortunate situation of deleting each message inpidually. However, there is a keyboard-based process to facilitate removal. Here’s what you should do:

1. Click the first message you want to delete. Then click on the Up arrow to highlight the message. The text box may be highlighted instead. If so, click the up arrow again.

2. Click the Recoil button (or the Delete on a Mac). Then click on the Get into to confirm that you want to delete the message.

3. Repeat the process for each message you have sent.

This method has some drawbacks, but unfortunately, it’s all we can do with Discord’s chat deletion limitations. This may take a while depending on how many messages you are trying to delete, you cannot delete messages you have received and this will not delete the other person’s messages in the chat.
