As a server administrator, you may want to include regulations on your server to help define its culture, keep it fun and safe, and set boundaries.

How to add rules to a Discord server

Before adding server rules, you will need to enable the Community feature on the server. Read on to find out how to do it, and then add your rules.

Enable community feature

To set your server rules, you will first need to allow the “Community” feature on the server. Follow the steps to enable the Community feature by turning your server into a community server using desktop:

  1. Navigate to Discord or use the desktop app to log in.

  3. Under the server name, click “Next” and then select the “Server Settings” option.

  4. From the “Server Overview” screen, in the left sidebar under the “Community” section, click “Enable Community.”

  5. To convert your server to a community server, click “Get Started.”

  6. On the “Security Checks” screen, your email address must be verified before continuing. If you haven’t already, you can check it out now. And “Explicit Media Filter” should be enabled.

  7. Once all this is done, press “Next”.

  8. On the “Set up basics” screen, you can use the drop-down menus to set a rules or guidelines channel and a community updates channel. If you don’t have these channels, choose “Create one for me.” Once your channels are set up, press “Next.”

  9. From the “Final Touches” page, you will be presented with the following options:

    • “Remove moderation permissions from @everyone”
    • “I agree and understand”
  10. Check the checkboxes, and then to complete the setup, click “Finish Setup.”

How to Add Rules to a Discord Server on PC

Once your server becomes a community server, you can add your Discord server rules. Here are the steps to do it using the desktop app:

  1. Start the Discord web or desktop application and sign in.

  2. Navigate to your community server, then at the top left, click on the server name and choose “Server Settings.”

  3. Click “Membership Assessment” under the “Community” section in the left sidebar.

  4. To add server rules, toward the bottom of the page, click “Get Started.”

  5. Enter the rule you want to deploy to your server or choose from the example rule set.

  7. Next, you’ll need to add a server description before the rules are active. Under “Description”, briefly introduce the server and then click “Activate”.

Once the “Membership Detection” feature is enabled, new members will need to accept its rules before sending messages and reactions in one of the channels.

How to Add Rules to a Discord Server on an iPhone

Currently, the mobile app does not allow you to manage the “Membership Review” feature. However, you can log in to your Discord account to manage and configure the new rules using the web app.

Before adding server rules, you must convert the server to a community server. See the “Enable the community feature” section above to learn how to do this. Following are the steps to add rules to your community server using your iPhone:

  1. Navigate to the Discord web application and log in to your account.

  5. Use the virtual keyboard to enter the rule you want to deploy to your server. Alternatively, choose from the example rule set.

  7. Now enter a server description to enable the rules. Under “Description,” say what the server is about and then tap “Activate.”

New members will now have to accept their rules before sending messages and reactions in one of the channels.

How to Add Rules to a Discord Server on an iPad

If you are using an iPad, there is no option to manage the “Membership Review” feature through the mobile app. The workaround is to use the desktop experience by logging into your account through the web app.

However, before adding server rules, you will need to convert the server to a community server. For steps on how to do this, go to the “Enable the community feature” section above. Here are the steps to add rules to a community server through your iPad:

  1. Go to the Discord web application and log in.

Before a new member can participate on your server, they must first agree to the rules.

Unfortunately, the mobile app does not yet allow you to manage the “Membership Review” feature. The good news is that you can still use your phone to access the web app and set up your rules using the desktop version of Discord.

Once your server becomes a community server, you can add your server rules. Steps on how to do this can be found in the “Enable the community feature” section above, then follow the steps below to configure your server rules using Android:

  1. Go to the Discord web application and log in to your account.

Maintain order on your Discord servers

Setting rules on your servers can help minimize bullying, spam, harassment, and generally set the tone. Discord allows you to set your own regulations or use preset regulations for your community servers through the “Member Detection” tool.
