Ready to move playlist creation to AI? Amazon Music has a new feature called Teacher which is now available as a beta version for some US customers. The AI playlist generator creates playlists based on user prompts and also suggests playlists.
Whether you subscribe to Amazon Music’s free, Prime, or Unlimited tier, you’ll be able to use Maestro through iOS and Android apps, although there will be some differences in the extent to which you can take advantage of the AI feature. Unlimited subscribers can listen to playlists instantly and save them. Prime and Free users can listen to 30-second previews of suggested playlists before saving them. (It’s not clear from Amazon Music’s ad whether that 30-second preview shows different songs or is just one song from the playlist.)
Maestro works by taking an immediate idea (emojis, emotions, activities, sounds or suggested ideas) and using them to create a playlist tailored to that idea.
In one example cited by Amazon, you could use a robot emoji to “get an exclusive playlist for you that brings to life a selection of electronic and robot tracks.” Other examples of prompts included emojis for a crying face and spaghetti along with phrases like “Myspace was hip-hop.”
In its announcement, Amazon warned that the technology is new, so Maestro “won’t always get it right the first time.” Amazon says it has also implemented systems to block offensive language and inappropriate prompts.
To see if you were included in the beta, make sure your version of the Amazon Music app is the latest. According to Amazon Music, if you’re in the beta, you should see Maestro on the home screen or when you tap the plus sign (+) to create playlists.
It’s unclear how many people will initially be included in the Maestro beta, but the company noted that it plans to slowly expand access.
Many of Amazon’s products have begun to adopt new artificial intelligence tools in recent months. This includes everything from Alexa and Fire TV to shopping on Amazon with its new assistant, Rufus.
