Whenever people talk about browser cache, they tend to stick to one topic: clearing the cache. But they don’t usually talk about the importance or mechanics of the process. Actually, some browsers refresh their cache or delete it automatically.
Of course, it doesn’t happen as often as we would like. Otherwise, manual user intervention would not be necessary. Cache is immensely useful for websites, cloud services, and web applications. It can make everything run faster and smoother.
The downside is that it can also slow things down. Hence the need to understand how the cache works, how it is stored, and what to do about it if it causes more harm than good.
Cache refresh times
Although most browsers perform the same essential functions, no two Internet browsers are identical. Each software has its own policies, default settings, and user preferences. That means there is no preset period of time for browsers to automatically refresh an inpidual website’s cache.
For example, some browsers only retrieve newer cache files after older files expire. This can range from a few minutes to days or years. It depends on how often a person visits a specific website or uses that browser.
However, browsers can keep cached elements indefinitely only in theory. Many cached files have HTTP headers such as “Last Modified”, “Cache Control”, and “Expires”. Based on headers, browsers set precise expiration dates for content.
They can retrieve a new file after the expiration date or simply delete the cache automatically.
Force cache refresh
To understand why it is essential to refresh the cache or delete it, it is important to know the difference between refreshing a page and manually refreshing the cache.
Most browsers have the same page refresh button. Pressing the “F5” key, clicking the refresh button, or right-clicking a tab and selecting the refresh option will perform a standard refresh. The browser will reload the page using the same cache file it had stored.
Unfortunately, this won’t always make a website load faster or perform better. It occurs when the cache file is out of date. Sometimes users must force a cache refresh.
This action forces browsers to retrieve the most recent web page information from their servers instead of any cached files the browser has stored. In other words, the server sends a completely updated version of the page to the browser.
Forcing a cache refresh may work differently in some browsers. For example, many Windows browsers, such as Opera, Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and others, issue “Cache-Control: no-cache” commands to the server. In return, browsers fetch the page directly from the server.
But on OS X systems, initiating a forced cache refresh will delete the cache and then reload the page. Again, with a clean cache, the browser can retrieve the page directly from the server, without the need for locally stored cache files.
Force cache refresh on macOS
If you’re using a Mac, you probably use Safari for most browsing activities. The following commands will help you perform a forced cache refresh:
- Press “Option+⌘”.

- Press “Command + E.”

- Hold down “Command + R” to refresh the page with a clean cache.

Force cache refresh in Windows
Edge, Chrome, Opera, and Firefox use the same keyboard hotkeys to force cache refresh. Press “Ctrl + F5” instead of the standard “F5.” It will send the command “Cache-Control: no-cache” and force the browser to use files coming directly from the server to load a page.
Clear cache manually
There is no consensus on how long is too long to keep cache files. Some apps and websites tend to run slower after a while. But others do fine after months of using the same cache files.
That being said, clearing your browser cache manually is a great habit to get into. And depending on your browser, the process may look a little different.
Clear cache in Chrome
Most users should know how to clear cache in Chrome. But let’s recap the process anyway:
- Launch Chrome.

- Click the three dots button in the upper right corner.

- Go to “More Tools.”

- Select “Clear browsing data…”

- Check the “Cached images and files” option.

- Select a time range and press “Clear data”.

Please note that this will not delete your browsing history, autofill data, or cookies unless you choose to wipe the slate clean with Chrome.
Clear cache in Firefox
If you want to clear the Firefox cache, you must do so from the “History” menu.
- Start Firefox.

- Go to “History.”

- Select “Clear recent history…”

- Check the “Cache” option.

- Click “Clean Now.”

Again, this will only remove cached files from local storage. You must add other selections to clear cookies, login information, site preferences, offline data, etc.
Clear cache in Safari
Safari’s cache clearing process is quite simple but can delete more stored information than you want.
- Start Safari.

- Go to the “History” tab.

- Click “Clear history…”

- Select websites or entire browsing history.

- Click “Clear history.”

Note that clearing history in Safari deletes everything, including cached files, saved passwords and user credentials, cookies, and other items.
Clear cache in Edge
Launch your Microsoft Edge browser and follow the steps below to clear the cache to make room for new website files.
- Click the three dot menu button.

- Go to settings.”

- Select “Privacy and services.”

- Go to the “Clear browsing data” tab.

- Check “Cached images and files”.

- Select cookies and other items you want to delete.

- Click the “Delete” button.

Clear cache in Opera
Opera has a different process for clearing the cache, but it is similar to Safari’s process.
- Start Opera.

- Go to the main menu.

- Go to “Settings”.

- Go to “Privacy and security.”

- Click on the “Clear browsing data” option.

- Click the “Advanced” menu in the right panel.

- Press “Clear data.”

You can force Opera to automatically clear its cache on shutdown, which is pretty cool:
- Go to settings.”

- Go to “Privacy and security.”

- Select “Cookies and other site data”.

- Move the “Clear cookies and site data when you exit Opera” slider to on.

Enabling this option will prevent Opera from storing local cache files. Therefore, whenever you visit a website, you will get the page directly from the host server. It may not always make your browsing smoother, but it should eliminate connection issues and cache overflow.
Top Reasons Why You Need to Refresh Browser Cache or Clear It Completely
Whenever users access websites, browsers store various data, such as site information and cache files. But even if something changes on the website or server, users can still access them using older information and files.
This can create a couple of problems.
For example, people may access websites using old or expired forms. Doing so may compromise the security of the connection and data transfer.
