Breeding Axies is an important aspect of Axie Infinity, and these digital creatures can reach prices of up to a million dollars. Bird breeders know how to combine traits and produce valuable offspring, and Axie breeding is similar. However, you can’t blindly pe into Axie breeding.

Axie Infinity Breeding Guide
All Axies start out as fertile creatures and can pass on specific traits to their offspring. Except for Origin Axies and MEO Axies, they cost Smooth Love Potion. After exhausting an Axie’s breed count, they become sterile forever.
These are the first things you should learn about creating Axies, as the developers do not want to oversaturate the market with specific traits and characteristics. With these limitations, players can enjoy a variety of Axie genes and mutations.
Raising the Axies
The basic process to allow Axies to play is quite simple. You will need the following items or creatures:
- Two compatible and fertile Axies
- SLP

- AXES

When you’re ready, follow these steps:
- Navigate to your Axie inventory.

- Select the first Axie you want to breed.

- Click the “Race” button between “Sell” and “Gift.”

- In the new window that appears, choose another Axie to be the second parent.

- Once you’re ready, click “Let’s Breed” to allow your adorable monsters to breed.

- You will receive a notification and seconds later you will find an egg in your inventory.

The egg will need 24 hours to incubate and after that period it will develop into a larva. The Axie will remain as a larva for 48 hours and you still won’t be able to tell what genes it inherits. What’s more, egg color does not affect your Axie’s genes, even if it is based on the type of the parents.
Three days after hatching, your Axie becomes Petite, the equivalent of a cross between a juvenile and an adolescent. You can finally see her class and traits, but you’ll have to head to your inventory and pay a small fee plus ETH gas fee to transform her.
It must take another 48 hours before your Axie transforms into an adult, and the transformation process also requires some payment. Once an Axie matures, it is ready to breed and fight.
Breed count
An Axie’s breed count directly impacts breeding cost, and a higher breed count translates into more SLP spent. Each Axie can only reproduce seven times, and after that, it becomes permanently sterile.
These are the breeding costs based on the number of times an Axies was played:
- Virgin Axie costs 100 SLP
- 200 SLP for 1/7 times
- 300 SLP for 2/7 times
- 500 SLP for 3/7 times
- 800 SLP for 4/7 times
- 1,300 SLP for 5/7 times
- 2,100 SLP for 6/7 times
- Sterile 7/7 times
Each parent’s breed count will affect the amount of SLP spent during breeding. For example, breeding a virgin Axie with another that has been mated five times will cost 1,400 SLP in total.
You can check an Axie’s breed count in the inventory and it’s always a good idea to be careful. If you accidentally waste a replay opportunity, you won’t be able to get it back no matter how hard you try.
Breeding also costs one AXS. You earn this cryptocurrency by playing, similar to how players make SLP.
Axie Genetics
Each Axie has particular traits that they were born with and that they can pass on to their offspring, and learning about genetics can be intimidating for newbies. However, the basics are fairly simple to understand, and once you understand the mechanics, creating the ideal Axie can become trivial.
No matter how rare an Axie is, it has six body parts and one body shape. Each part has three genes. They are dominant, recessive and minor recessive.
Dominant genes are those already present in the creature, such as tail shape or pattern. Both recessive and minor recessive genes do not manifest physically, but can be passed on to offspring.
These are the possibilities of each gene:
- Dominant genes have a 37.5% chance.
- Recessive genes have a probability of 9.375%
- Minor recessive genes have a probability of 3.124%
During genetic calculation, each of the 12 recessive genes has a 10% chance of mutation. Mutations result in completely random body parts that are not inherited from parents. Dominant genes will never mutate.
Each mutated gene does not affect the chance of mutation of another gene. Taking common mutations into account, 32% of Axies will have no mutations, while the remaining 68% will have at least one.
Here are some mutation possibilities:
- 28.84% probability of no mutations
- 37.66% chance of a mutation
- 23.01% chance of two mutations
- 8.523% chance of three mutations
- 2.131% chance of four mutations
- 0.379% chance of five mutations
- 0.049% chance of six mutations
The possibility of further mutations is extremely low but not impossible.
Mutations can also cause some offspring to become pure Axies. A pure Axie has all six body parts of a class, such as Plant or Bug.
Axies also have a single class, which is either parent. Thus, you have a 50% chance of inheriting one type or another. Offspring cannot be born with different classes than their parents, making class mutations impossible.
If the parents are of the same class, their offspring will also be born with that class.
As for body patterns, they are inherited from both parents. The difference is that you can combine the body patterns of both parents and produce offspring with particular shapes and traits. These recipes are predetermined and it does not matter which parent you choose first on the selection screen.
Standard body patterns are the most common. However, rarer patterns make Axies appear fluffier and furrier, such as Spiky, Curly, and Fluffy.
The most desirable patterns are unique patterns:
- wet dog
- Sumo
- big yak
You can raise all three with the following recipes:
- P3 (Trispike) + P29 (Spikey) = P34 (Sumo)
- P1 (shaggy) + P30 (curly) = P33 (wet dog)
- P33 (Wet Dog) + P34 (Sumo) = P49 (Big Yak)

More about classes
Each Axie belongs to one of these six classes:
- Beast

- Bug

- Bird

- Reptile

- Plant

- Water

However, three secret classes require great preparation and luck to reproduce. They are:
- Darkness

- Sunrise

- mechanic

All three require two pure Axies, and the recipes also don’t guarantee you’ll get one of these classes. There is a 33% chance, which means you may have to try more than once if you’re not so lucky.
- Reptile + Aquatic = Dusk
- Bug + Beast = Mech
- Plant + Bird = Dawn
Playback loops
Since you cannot breed Axies that are siblings or parents, the community has developed optimized paths that result in unlimited generations. These are called playback loops and they take advantage of having at least three Axies that are not related to each other.
The most common loop is the ABC method which involves three Axies:
- The first two Axies will breed twice to produce two offspring, which will take several days as the offspring grow.
- After the children grow up, you breed the third Axie with one of the younger ones and it produces two more Axies.
- One of these new offspring will breed with the second generation Axie that has not yet mated.
- Repeat until you want to stop.
While the cycle sounds good on paper, mutations may eventually make the Axies themselves more expensive than their asking price. At this point, it is best to start a new cycle and sell all the Axies you used. Anyway, if you’re lucky, you can breed a purebred Axie and make a profit.
The second most popular method is the ABCD method, and you can even switch from ABC to this at some point.
- The first two Axies will play four times.
- The other pair will also reproduce four times.
- Now that you have four pairs of offspring, you can raise them and spawn even more Axies.
- Repeat the loop.
When starting spawn cycles, always plan meticulously unless you just want to spawn regular Axies for students. If you’re looking to produce pure Axies, it takes good luck and extensive planning. You’ll also need the purest Axies possible, which can be time-consuming to acquire.
The best genes
Axies with perfect genetics and incredible stats tend to sell for a lot of money. However, for every pure Axie, you’re likely to end up with some mutations that don’t sell for much. Regardless, the Axie breeding process will take a lot of time and money before you strike gold.
