“I campaigned door to door for marriage equality in Ireland, I participated in marches for the right to abortion. I’ve always been concerned about causes and social justice… For me it’s always about supporting all the innocent people, which sounds oversimplified, but I think you have to look at situations and just think: ‘Are we supporting people? innocent no matter where? Whose are they, who are they? That’s my drive,” she said.
The actress confessed that she was warned not to express her support for Palestine amid the months-long conflict with Israel.
“They tell you [in Hollywood], ‘You won’t get a job,’ ‘You won’t do this,’” he said. “But I also think that, deep down, if you know that you’re coming from a position of ‘I don’t want any innocent people to suffer,’ then I don’t care about people’s reactions.”
Other actors have faced serious consequences for expressing support for Palestine amid the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. Actress Melissa Barrera was fired Shout for calling for a ceasefire on social media, and Susan Sarandon was fired from her agency after speaking at a pro-Palestinian rally.
But Coughlan expressed that she felt it was important for her to continue using her platform for social causes.
“I think it’s important to me because, first of all, I’m a very privileged person,” Coughlan said. “I am very fortunate to have reached this point in my career and, first of all, I am privileged as a white woman. Then, being able to do the work I love, travel the world and meet amazing people, I feel a moral responsibility to give back.”
The actress was among many who wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin at this year’s Oscars ceremony. By teen fashionthe reports, Bridgerton Fans started an X account called Polins x Gaza Care (the fandom name for Coughlan’s season 3 romance with co-star Luke Newton’s character) to raise thousands of dollars for Care for Gaza.
Coughlin said this was “a testament that the people who follow me are so kind and generous.”
He added: “I feel like, in the best possible way, my opinion on situations doesn’t matter, but because I have a platform and I have a couple million people on there, if I can raise a little money, isn’t that an amazing thing to do?” do?
