Former Nickelodeon writer and producer Dan Schneider has filed a defamation lawsuit against the companies and directors behind it. Silence on the set: The dark side of children’s televisionclaiming that the docuseries painted him as a child sexual abuser and prevented him from finding work in Hollywood.
The five-part series included interviews from former Nickelodeon employees and former child actors, many of whom spoke about Schneider’s inappropriate behavior on set. Some Nickelodeon employees spoke about her “abusive” management style, while former child actors who starred in her television shows recalled that her writings sometimes made “references to pornography.”
The lawsuit claims that Silence on set The doctor was a “successful job.”
“Critically, [Schneider] “he himself was not a sexual abuser of children,” the complaint says, according to NBC News. “But for the sake of clickbait, ratings and views (or, put another way, money), defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that.”
Silence on set It marked the first time former child star Drake Bell spoke out about the sexual abuse he suffered while working at Nickelodeon. The document also highlighted two registered sex offenders who worked in the network.
“While it is indisputable that two bona fide child sexual abusers worked on Nickelodeon shows, it is also indisputable that Schneider had no knowledge of their abuse, was not complicit in the abuse, condemned the abuse once it was discovered, and, critically, “It was not he himself, he is a sexual abuser of children,” the lawsuit reads. “But for the sake of clickbait, ratings and views (or, put another way, money), defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that.”
He also accuses the filmmakers of rejecting interviewees who didn’t fit the documentary’s “false and defamatory narrative.”
Silence on set It allegedly cost Schneider “valuable deals” with major networks and has made it “virtually impossible” for him to find work, according to the lawsuit.
In a statement to Time MagazineSchneider said: “There is no doubt that I was a bad leader at times. I sincerely apologize and regret that behavior, and will continue to take responsibility for it. However, after seeingSilence on setand its trailer, and the reactions to them, unfortunately I have no choice but to take legal action against the people behind this.”
He stated that the documentary “went beyond reporting the truth and falsely implied that I was involved in or facilitated horrific crimes for which real child predators have been prosecuted and convicted.”
Schneider is seeking compensation for financial and emotional damages. It also demands that parts of the docuseries and trailer be edited or removed.
