Hellpers 2 is a beloved game, but it recently came under fire from PC gamers, with Sony demanding PSN play it. Clearly, Sony wanted to take advantage of the game’s popularity to get more players to sign up for its online service. Sony even removed the game from Steam in 177 regions where PSN is not available. But it backfired.
Now, Sony has decided to bow to the masses by removing the PSN requirement from the game, which should make gamers happy. However, the damage may already be done, as Hellpers 2 received thousands of negative reviews on Steam.
“Hellpers fans, we’ve heard your feedback regarding the Hellpers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required linking Steam and PlayStation Network accounts for new players and for current players starting on May 30, it will not advance.” the official PlayStation account said in a statement. post on X (formerly Twitter).
It seems like Sony is still trying to figure out what PC gamers want, and as expected, it’s not just about additional forced logins. “We’re still learning what’s best for PC gamers and your feedback has been invaluable. Thank you again for your continued support of Hellpers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans,” the post continued.
CEO of Arrowhead (the game’s developer) and creative director of Hellpers 2, Johan Pilestedt, also published in X about the situation, citing the players’ “willpower.” The CEO said: “Together we want to set a new standard for what live gaming is and how developers and the community can support each other to create the best gaming experiences.”
Sony wasn’t just adding PSN to recruit new users, however, as the service would help with moderation. Pilestedt said the company is “building systems to replace” that functionality, although the team has not yet given a name.
While it’s unfortunate that all the backlash has occurred, the outcome is positive, and Sony shows that it’s willing to listen to gamer feedback even if it goes against the company’s original plans. For PC gamers enjoying Hellpers 2, it looks like everything will stay the same for now, which is a good thing in this case.
