Manchester City’s modern dominance of the Premier League continued with Pep Guardiola’s men claiming another title in 2022/23.
After beating surprise rivals Arsenal in the race a year ago, they now look likely to clinch what would be a record fourth consecutive title in England’s top flight. The Gunners are the only team that can stop City in 2023/24, but the battle is out of their hands with just two games left for each side.
City have lifted England’s top-flight trophy in five of the last six seasons, with only Liverpool able to break that run in the pandemic-interrupted 2019/20 campaign. It seems inevitable that on May 19 there will be six titles in seven seasons.
But how do City rank among the heavyweights of English football historically? Here, we look at how Man City’s titles stack up against the best.

How many Premier League titles have Manchester City won?
Man City have nine English top-flight titles and the latest has seen them equal Everton’s all-time total.
However, the Citizens still have a long way to go before catching Manchester United and Liverpool.

season 1936/37
The 1930s were a boom time for City, who won their second FA Cup in 1934 against Portsmouth at Wembley, having lost the previous year’s final to Everton. During the 1934 run, City broke the record for the largest home attendance in English football history when 84,569 fans packed Maine Road for a sixth round clash against Stoke City.
Manager Wilf Wild won their first league title in 1936/37, and City scored 107 goals throughout the campaign; forward duo Peter Doherty and Eric Brook were responsible for 50 of them. In a tragicomic twist that foreshadowed many of the club’s problems at the turn of the century, City were relegated the following season and remain the only reigning English champions to suffer such a fate.
1967/68 season
Two seasons after winning promotion to the First Division, a fearless City team led by Joe Mercer and pioneering coach Malcolm Allison marched to glory. A team featuring club greats Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee won 4-3 at Newcastle on the final day of the season to snatch the title from Matt Busby’s Manchester United.
That success began a golden era at City that remains unsurpassed to this day, with Neil Young scoring the only goal to sink Leicester in the 1969 FA Cup final before Mercer’s men lifted the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970.
2011/12 season
City also overtook United on the final day 44 years later, when Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero rescued glory from the jaws of calamity with a 3-2 victory over QPR to spark scenes of chaos at the Etihad Stadium.
Roberto Mancini’s team had already collapsed at the start of 2012, having led the way for much of the first half of the season. They fell eight points behind United with six games remaining but recovered to win them all, including Vincent Kompany heading home the winner in a high-stakes Manchester derby to set up the remarkable outcome.
2013/14 season
Mancini’s title defense crumbled to the point that he was sacked following City’s shock defeat in the 2013 FA Cup final to Wigan. Manuel Pellegrini took the reins and City were thrilled with an attacking style of football – the attacking partnership of Agüero and Álvaro Negredo inspiring a thrilling mid-season run.
A loss in April to a rampaging Liverpool team at Anfield suggested City had run out of steam, but the same core of the team replicated their exploits from two seasons earlier, winning their last five games.
A series of stumbles elsewhere – from Chelsea taking a point from home games against Sunderland and Norwich to falling out of the title race before beating Liverpool when Steven Gerrard slipped and Demba Ba scored, to Brendan Rodgers’ team that collapsed in an incredible final. The week’s 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace meant all the snooker players City needed arrived and they beat West Ham 2-0 to seal the title on the final day.
2017/18 season
Guardiola inherited from Pellegrini a team in need of major surgery, and his first trophyless campaign in 2016/17 was followed by the influential arrivals of Ederson, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva. City proceeded to smash the record books as they pulled away from the competition.
A December derby victory at Old Trafford effectively turned the second half of the season into a procession in which the Blues racked up victory after victory. The only blemish on the season was a 3-2 defeat to 2-0 against United at the Etihad Stadium in April, when a victory would have crowned City with a victory over their bitter rivals.
Jose Mourinho’s side’s defeat at home to West Brom the following weekend meant they did not have to wait too long to confirm themselves as champions and Gabriel Jesus’ last-gasp winning goal at Southampton on the final day ensured that City was the first English team. history to accumulate 100 points in a single season.
2018/19 season
Compared to the 19-point lead City enjoyed over United in the final analysis, things could not have been more different the following season. Klopp’s Liverpool had already marked themselves as City’s most likely rivals with a destructive 5-1 aggregate victory in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2018. When the teams met at the Etihad Stadium in January 2019 , were seven points ahead of Guardiola’s men. at the summit.

A lackluster draw in December against West Brom persuaded the Catalan tactician to return to his fundamentals of keeping wingers wide, keeping players in their positions and looking for an extra pass. The result was an English run of 21 consecutive victories in all competitions and another title race shattered – a 4-1 victory over an ailing Liverpool at Anfield in February that served as an emphatic exclamation point.
2021/22 season
Mastering the routine of pandemic football in empty stadiums in a more methodical style was one thing, but could City do it again amid the noise and heat of full houses? Despite not getting Harry Kane or any replacement for the outgoing Agüero, the answer has been a resounding “yes”.
City were rarely better this season than in the biggest games, making the best of thrilling 2-2 draws with Liverpool and twice inflicting 90 minutes of total control and dominance on Chelsea and a beleaguered Manchester United. The fact that they managed to be largely foolish against Villa, crashing headlong into the final hurdle, only served to set up a conclusion to rival Aguero’s finest moment.
2022/23 season
Unlike their other dominant seasons in recent years, in 2022/23 Guardiola’s men chased Arsenal for much of the campaign.
But from February onwards, City picked up the pace and when Arsenal stumbled, Guardiola’s team went on a 10-match winning streak to finally take top spot.
City became the second English team in history to win the league, FA Cup and Champions League treble in the same season.
