What is an assistance?
In American football, an assist is awarded to the player who makes the final pass before a teammate scores a goal. It could be a defense-splitting pass, a precise cross or just a simple push of the ball to the side (see Sergio Busquets ‘helping’ Lionel Messi score against Real Madrid in 2011).

However, assistance does not have to be intentional. For example, if a player scores a goal after the ball bounces kindly to him after hitting the back of his teammate’s head, that teammate will be credited with setting up the goal.
However, a player does not receive an official assist if he wins a penalty for another to score, nor if the opposing goalkeeper saves a shot and a teammate scores from the rebound.
