After a lot of battles and mining, players can look for a more peaceful activity to slow down the pace. In Minecraft, it’s not difficult to find a water source, which means there are frogs nearby. One of the ways to pass the time is by raising these adorable creatures.
Raising frogs may seem simple, but not everyone knows the ins and outs of this activity. You will need some preparation before searching for frogs. Keep reading to find out all the information.
Types of frogs
You can find three types of frogs, but they all have similar behavior and only differ in their origin. They are:
- Tempered
- Cold
- Warm
As the names suggest, these frogs come from biomes that fit their types. For example, letting a tadpole grow in the Badlands will result in a warm frog. Frogs that grow in a frozen river will become cold frogs.
Frogs typically only spawn in the Swamp and Mangrove biomes, so you need to travel to either environment and catch some frogs. Swamp frogs are temperate, while those in a mangrove are considered warm.
How to breed frogs in Minecraft
Players need Slimeballs to attract frogs and there are two ways to get them. You either kill some Slimes or make the Pandas sneeze at them, although the first method is more reliable. Two Slimeballs are enough to raise two frogs at a time.
When you have Slimeballs in your hand, all frogs within six blocks will follow you. That’s when they are ready to reproduce. Follow these steps to raise frogs:
- Gather some slime balls.
- Look for some frogs in your overworld.
- Feed two frogs a slime ball each to get them into love mode.
- Wait until one of the frogs becomes pregnant.
- The frog will then look for a water block and place Frogspawn.
- Wait for Frogspawn to turn into tadpoles.
- Wait or feed the tadpoles more slime balls to make them grow faster.
Frogspawn can take between two and 20 minutes to hatch, but it will always happen. Uniquely, the game treats tadpoles as a completely separate mob from frogs until they grow up.
How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft Pocket Edition
The requirements for raising frogs in Minecraft: Pocket Edition are identical to those on other platforms. The only significant differences are that Pocket Edition has some unique biomes that Java Edition does not have, since it is based on Bedrock. Here’s what you need to do to raise frogs in Pocket Edition:
- Get some slime balls from slimes or pandas.
- Find at least two frogs in the game.
- Equip the Slimeballs and touch the frogs.
- Wait for the frogs to reproduce and one of them will become pregnant.
- Let the frog put Frogspawn.
- Let the Frogspawn turn into tadpoles.
- You can let the tadpoles grow naturally or feed them more Slimeballs.
Frog Behavior in Minecraft
When you first encounter frogs, they are either in water or on land. They jump randomly on the ground, similar to their real-life counterparts. However, they can jump eight blocks high and take much less fall damage than most mobs in Minecraft.
Frogs prefer to jump on lily pads and large drip leaves, which means you will naturally find them near bodies of water. If they see a higher block, they will try to jump on it, except for Honey Blocks. They won’t be able to jump over them.
In water, frogs will swim and travel faster, staying on the surface of the water. They usually don’t swim down unless players lure them with Slimeballs. As amphibians, frogs cannot drown in Minecraft.
When tamed and lured, frogs will attack some mobs, putting them in their mouths and disappearing. They are useful against small Slimes and will drop even more Slimeballs after attacking these enemies.
Where frogs are useful besides attacking mobs is creating Froglight. This substance will only drop when a frog tries to digest small cubes of magma. All Froglight cubes emit light level 15, the highest possible level for their class.
The type of frog also affects Froglight’s color. Here is a list showing what you get:
- Warm frogs shed pearly frog light, which glows pink.
- Temperate frogs shed ocher frog light, which glows yellow.
- Cold frogs shed green frog light, which glows green.
To farm specific colors, you can use buckets to transport tadpoles to specific biomes and let them grow. Since they become one of three types depending on where you leave them, it’s not difficult to get the Froglight colors you want.
