BRIDGERTON SEASON 3, PART 2: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Initial shot: Penelope Featherington is sitting at her desk writing Lady Whistledown’s latest newsletter. “Dear reader,” she begins, “while most seasons of our fair marriage market follow a predictable pattern, this author likes it best when there is a surprise.” Of course, she’s writing about her own engagement to Colin Bridgerton, news that will be made public when the Whistledown letter is published the next morning.
The essence: The fact that Colin proposed to Penelope at the end of the first half of season 3 seems like a dream in many ways. Penelope had written it off as an impossibility, and so now, as Colin drags her to Bridgerton House to show her off to her family as her fiancée, it makes sense that the moment is filmed in crazy, delirious slow motion, the image of Penelope. head unable to understand any of this.
And while the Bridgertons are generally happy for the couple, Eloise is definitely not; she taunts Penelope and wonders if this is all just another secret ploy Pen was keeping from her, and she threatens to expose Penelope’s identity as Whistledown to Colin unless Penelope does it first. As Penelope becomes sicker and sicker about what will happen to her when the truth is discovered, she is not so sick that she cannot write a new Whistledown announcing her own engagement to Colin for everyone, including her mother and sisters, to notice. read. Pen is obviously panicking about this and Eloise’s ultimatum, but the real surprise is that Cressida Cowper, who seems destined to marry a rich old plum unless she comes up with a better plan, doesn’t limit herself. to promise to discover Whistledown’s identity. so she can get cash; She actually assumes her identity and tells anyone who will listen that she is Whistledown. And with that, either all of Penelope’s problems are solved or her pride won’t allow Cressida to take credit for her life’s work. Either way, nothing is simple and it makes Penelope pass out from the stress of it all.
Our opinion: The first half of Bridgerton Season 3 was the lead-up to Colin and Penelope’s engagement; the obstacles in their path, the strained feelings between Pen and Eloise that threatened to expose Penelope’s identity as Lady Whistledown, and Eloise’s new, often confusing alliance with her greatest enemy, Cressida Cowper. Most of these things have done a complete 180 in Part 2, and the show cleverly pivots around all the changing relationships as Eloise and Pen become friends again in an effort to keep Cressida from ruining them for all. If the first part felt tense because people weren’t acting the way we’re used to them acting, the second part is a return to form for many of the characters.
Bridgerton It works so well because of the way it allows each character to have layers, usually without revealing the deeper layers until absolutely necessary; Most of the motives behind everyone’s actions are due to things beyond their own control. Cressida sucks so much because her parents are forcing her to live a life she knows she will hate, she is desperate and will do anything not to marry an old man or move to another city. Welsh. (Welcome to… Wrexham?) Portia Featherington does everything she does out of some kind of desperation, too; As the season progresses, she also has moments of softness that also manage to explain why she is the status-obsessed daughter pusher that she is. And Penelope also has the moment for her to articulate why she finds it so difficult to stop being Lady Whistledown, even now that she has something better on the horizon: a marriage to the man of her dreams. The show justifies everyone’s behavior, that’s a tribute to the writing and is a feature that many shows lack. The stakes this season seem higher than ever because Colin has been primed to see Whistledown as his enemy, one whose fall he will delight in. So while we can happily celebrate Polin, the real drama is the tension that builds as we move towards The Discovery of Colin and what it will mean for everyone.
Sex and skin: Penelope and Colin finally make it! There are tits! There is a butt! All day on the chaise longue.
Parting Shot: Cressida Cowper, desperate to win the Queen’s financial reward for revealing Lady Whistledown’s identity, announces: “I am she” and declares that she is the gossip expert. The room full of guests is stunned by her revelation. Antony and Kate, who had been trying to tell the room full of people that they were expecting a baby, are stunned into silence. Penelope, who had been trying to find the right opportunity to tell Colin that she is actually Whistledown, passes out.
Performance worth seeing: Jessica Madsen is killing it this season as Cressida; Capable of gaining our sympathy one minute and eroding our trust the next, she’s complicated and messy and a joy to watch. Now that she has revealed the fake news that she is Whistledown, the question is, how can she convincingly maintain that ruse?
Memorable dialogue: “Until I know the real you, I can’t possibly love you,” says Eloise, no, threat Penelope, giving her former friend an ultimatum to tell Colin about her secret identity before the clock strikes midnight. So dramatic!
Our call: TRANSMIT IT. We always knew that Polin would be a juicy chapter in the Bridgerton story, but there are many aspects of the show, from Penelope’s brilliance to Cressida’s love-her/hate-her complexity to the Queen’s witch hunt for Whistledown, that have enriched the show and given the season’s central love story. . some tricky obstacles to maneuver.
