The Copa América will have an expanded tournament in 2024, in which 16 teams (10 from CONMEBOL and the top six from CONCACAF) will fight to lift one of the most coveted trophies in sport.
Divided into four groups of four teams each, only the best two in each group will qualify for the knockout phase.
But how does the ranking work in the event of a tie in the standings and what tiebreaker will be used? Jugo Mobile has all the details on the criteria used to decide the groups.
How the groups of the Copa América 2024 are decided in case of a tie
In the event that two or more teams finish with the same number of points in the group stage of the Copa América 2024, CONMEBOL, according to the competition regulations, has several criteria to establish the tiebreaker:
1. The team tied with the greatest goal difference in all group games. Goal difference is calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored.
2. The team tied with the highest number of goals scored in all group games.
3. Record of direct confrontations between the tied teams, considering only those games played in the group stage between the teams tied on points and the previous criteria of goal difference/goal scored. This tiebreaker will be defined according to the following order:
- Highest number of points obtained in group stage matches between the teams in question
- Greater goal difference in group stage matches between the teams in question. Goal difference is calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored.
- Highest number of goals scored in group stage matches between the teams in question.
4. Fewer red cards.
5. Fewer yellow cards.
6. By draw.
