The United States men’s national team’s first goal at the 2024 Copa América is to escape the group stage and qualify for a spot in the knockout stage.

Many expect much more from this US national team team, but the first step is to finish in the top two of Group C and qualify for the knockout stage of the competition. Elimination from the group stage would be a huge disappointment for them and would leave Gregg Berhalter’s position as head coach in serious trouble.

A quarter-final berth is the minimum required by most benchmarks, but some fans and media have expressed expectations of going even further in the tournament. Still, to do so, they must first secure passage from Group C, where they were drawn alongside Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia.

After beating Bolivia in the opening match but surprisingly losing to Panama, The Jugo Mobile details what the United States must do in its final two group games to secure a spot in the knockout stage.

How the United States can qualify for the Copa America Round of 16

Divided into four groups of four teams each, only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage.

The United States can mathematically confirm a spot in the knockout stage with one game left in the group stage, but they will need some outside help.

The USMNT picked up three points with a 2-0 win over Bolivia in the first game, putting them in a strong position going forward, but there is still work to be done. After falling a man down to Panama, the U.S. was defeated 2-1 in shocking fashion and thus failed to secure a spot in the knockout stage, instead finding themselves in a very dangerous position.

That leaves them to secure qualification until the last match against the toughest rival in the group, Uruguay, in a match in which they will almost certainly not be considered favorites. It is certainly a risky proposition.

A victory against Uruguay would ensure qualification for the knockout phase, regardless of the other results. Beyond that, at the moment it is not known what would take them to the next round, since the result of the Uruguay vs. Bolivia will determine the final classification of Group C once the day is over.

Who will the United States play against in the round of 16 of the Copa América?

The knockout phase of the 2024 Copa América is not structured like the Euro Cup or the World Cup, which distributes the two qualifiers from each group on opposite sides of the bracket.

Instead, the qualifiers from each group are placed on the same side of the table, making predicting where each team will finish much easier.

If the United States finishes in the top two of Group C and qualifies for the Round of 16, it would face a qualifier from Group D in the opposite position. Therefore, if the USMNT finishes first in Group C, it would face the second-place finisher from Group D, while if the United States finishes second in Group C, it would face the winner of Group D.

This means they will most likely face Brazil or Colombia in the quarter-finals, unless Costa Rica or Paraguay pull off a surprise and qualify.
