As the last CONCACAF nation standing in the tournament, Canada has impressed at the 2024 Copa America.
Les Rouges were the only invited team to reach the semi-finals and, despite losing to defending champions Argentina for the second time in the competition, will have the chance to play for a place on the podium as they contest the third-place match on Saturday.
They might be without one of their biggest stars for that game, though, with Alphonso Davies out of form. The 23-year-old was injured in that semi-final defeat to La Albiceleste and, while early reports appear to have allayed fears of a serious injury, there is still a chance he will miss the game.
Davies was named captain by new head coach Jesse Marsch ahead of the tournament, and so the nation’s surprising run to the final four came about under his watch.

Alphonso Davies was substituted in the 71st minute of Canada’s loss to Argentina in the 2024 Copa América semi-final.
With Canada trailing 2-0, Davies received lengthy medical treatment after a hard foul. The 23-year-old attempted to continue, but almost immediately went back to the ground knowing he couldn’t continue. He was replaced by Jonathan Osorio, forcing Canada to use its final substitution window.
A report by Matthew Scianitti Immediately after the match he indicated that Davies had “gone for post-match X-rays”, indicating that the injury could potentially be serious, but Scianitti posted later that night that the Canadian Soccer Federation confirmed to him that the tests were “all fine” and that nothing truly harmful was found.

While this is encouraging, there are still questions about the extent of his injury. Kicker reported on Wednesday morning that Davies had suffered an ankle injury and would be doubtful for the third-place play-off, but nothing further has been reported on the matter.
How did Alphonso Davies get injured vs Argentina?
With Canada trailing 2-0 to reigning world champions Argentina with just 20 minutes remaining in the match, Les Rouges star Davies was hoping to play a central role in any potential miraculous comeback.
However, his night was cut short when a challenge by Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul in the 70th minute left him lying on the field. De Paul’s challenge was legal and allowed him to win the ball back, but it also included a scissor move that crushed Davies’ right ankle.
For De Paul, it was the final act of a match filled with moments of dark arts. Just minutes earlier, he had tricked the referee into showing a dubious yellow card to Stephen Eustaquio, where De Paul had thrown himself to the ground writhing in pain despite the tackle having barely involved contact, save for a minor knock to the ankle.

Alphonso Davies transfer news amid Real Madrid rumours
Injuries can often change the course of transfers, even in the latter stages of negotiation. Alphonso Davies has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid over the past 12 months, so his injury left many wondering how it could affect any potential transfer.
It is impossible to know what dominoes might fall at this point, but it seems the injury would not be serious enough to derail any possible move.

Meanwhile, Georg Hozner of German publication Kicker has presented a vague report In recent days, “the current trend is that Davies will leave the club this summer.”
He is about to enter the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich so the German club have little leverage in transfer negotiations with suitors who know they could wait a year to sign the 23-year-old on a free transfer.
