Thomas Jolly, who served as artistic director of the ceremony, has since denied that the performance was inspired by The Last Supper amid public outcry.
“He’s not my inspiration and that should be pretty obvious,” he explained during an appearance on BFMTV, according to Deadline. “Dionysus arrives at a table. Why is he there? Firstly, because he is the god of celebration in Greek mythology and the painting is called Festivity.”
He continued: “He is also the god of wine, which is also one of the jewels of France, and the father of Séquana, the goddess of the river Seine.
