What does “EPQ” mean in Guide to Murdering a Good Girl on Netflix?
As Pip herself explains, “EPQ” stands for Extended Project Qualification. Ok, but what does that mean?
Basically, an EPQ is an extended research project that some British students undertake in their final year of high school. As the title suggests, it’s a project that takes an extended period of time. Months are spent researching a particular project, culminating in a dissertation (usually around 5,000 words). Students can also create a piece of art, music or theatre, but there has to be research behind it. The idea is that EPQs help prepare teenagers for university life by forcing them to undertake independent research over a long period of time. (And it’s not unlike the Oxbridge tutorial system, where undergraduates are responsible for researching a paper on a topic and then defending it to their tutors – i.e. lecturers.)
The EPQ is a fairly new addition to the British curriculum, so Pip asks Ravi if he had to take one when he was at school. That being said, how common is it to take the EPQ on a mystery novel? Uh… probably not that common. Which is why, unsurprisingly, everyone acts like it’s super weird that Pip is investigating the cold case. He’s probably supposed to be taking an EPQ on gothic literature.
