With the NBA champion Boston Celtics The team has been on the market for a while, and there has been talk of billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos buying it.
It all started when Bill Simmons said he believes there are “legitimate rumors” about Bezos buying the Celtics after the franchise… announced last month that the majority stake would be put up for sale. Simmons added that he believes the rumor is “real” and thinks Bezos will be a suitor.
Here’s more of what Simmons had to say about “The Bill Simmons Podcast” on Sunday night about Bezos’ possible purchase of the Celtics.
“There have been some rumors in the last few days, I think legitimate, about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics, and I think it’s real. I think he’s going to be one of the suitors,” Simmons said. “Which got me thinking, why is Jeff Bezos, when he’s looking at the Celtics, what is he looking at? What does he want? I think the only way it makes sense, I mean, it’s true that he’s got a ton of millions of dollars, but it’s one of the biggest franchises, right? So you get it. It wouldn’t be any different for him than if he bought this famous, gigantic $300 million yacht. But I think it’s real that he’s potentially in the mix for this.”

Simmons added that the NBA wants to sell the Boston franchise for a whopping $6 billion. According to ForbesBezos’ net worth is $196.7 billion.
“It’s a crazy price, but they’ll probably get it,” Simmons said. “They want the $6 billion because they want expansion teams in Seattle and Las Vegas — and Mexico City is shaping up to be the third team — but they want $6 billion for each of the two expansion franchises, which would mean a $400 million check for each NBA owner, all 30 of them.”
Amid rumors of Bezos’ possible interest in buying the Celtics, fans have begun dreaming about what the team would look like with him at the helm. Below are some reactions on social media.
The Celtics should (and certainly would) welcome an offer from Jeff Bezos. Deep pockets (to pay the luxury tax), a new arena (Bezos won’t be paying rent for a long time). The NBA would also love to have Bezos as part of its ownership group.

If Jeff Bezos buys the Celtics, the league will have given up… that’s the kind of money that can fund this team.

I would love the Celtics going up for sale situation.
– Bezos becomes majority owner.
– Bezos reaches an agreement with Pags and the rest of the current ownership group to allow them to stay and help run the team.Endless money for Brad and the local owners ?☘️

Me watching the Celtics spend over 300 million in luxury taxes to form the best team of all time and Bezos doesn’t care https://t.co/Urr1hCQBHV image.twitter.com/qZK4WhoPCu

My only request if Bezos buys the Celtics is that when he inevitably builds a new stadium, he calls it the Amazon Rainforest. It’s the perfect name for when all the Celtics green is raining down three-pointers nonstop.
