A shoulder injury to presumptive starter Jacoby Brissett has added another element to the Patriots’ ongoing battle at QB.
Brissett was injured after taking a hard hit in the team’s final preseason game against Washington. He was visibly shaken after the hit, but remained on the field to complete his only attack of the game, which ended with a punt.
Brissett is set to begin his second stint with New England and remains on track to be the franchise starter in Week 1. He started all three of the team’s preseason games and, during training camp, took more first-team starts than rookie Drake Maye, who was selected third overall in the 2024 draft.

Jacoby Brissett Injury Update
In the first quarter of New England’s Week 3 preseason game against Washington, Brissett was tackled by DE KJ Henry. The hit left Brissett with a right shoulder injury, a troublesome condition of a quarterback’s throwing arm.

After the game, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo didn’t seem overly concerned about the injury when he spoke with reporters after the match.
Will Jacoby Brissett be ready for Week 1?
Mayo suggested Brissett could have continued to play had it been a regular-season game, saying: “We’ll see tomorrow. You always feel more sore the next day, but he said he was in good shape.”
In addition to his positive update on Brissett, Mayo called Maye the “second-best quarterback” in New England, suggesting Brissett remains on track to start when the Patriots visit the Bengals to open the 2024 season.

As it stands, Brissett is the Patriots’ starting QB with Maye as the second-string quarterback.
New England’s investment in Maye as a future franchise QB likely means the team will take a calculated approach to elevating his status on the depth chart. The Patriots aren’t expected to be a postseason team in 2024 and will focus on Maye’s long-term development and health in Year 1.
