The 2024 Formula 1 season continues apace as we enter race week for the 14th time this campaign, and after a race of firsts at the Hungaroring last time out, we head to the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for the 80th running of the Belgian Grand Prix.

A long summer of back-to-back races across Europe takes the drivers to Belgium for the fifth meeting of seven in a row on the continent, and comes just a week after the 2024 World Drivers’ Championship race took another huge turn in Hungary, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claiming a first-ever career victory.

Piastri and team-mate Lando Norris scored a surprise one-two finish at the Hungaroring, a somewhat controversial performance. Norris, who appeared to be on the run, was ordered to let the Australian pass him for victory towards the end of the race. Just 2.141 seconds separated the pair at the finish, with fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton 14.88 seconds behind in third.

Defending champion Max Verstappen, winner of the last two Hungarian Grands Prix, had another day to forget, finishing fifth between the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, both in full revival. The Red Bull star has now failed to win any of the last three races, his longest run without a win since the 2021 season!

This weekend’s Spa event, however, offers the triple world champion a chance to get back to winning ways, having won last year’s Belgian Grand Prix by more than 22 seconds. Hamilton, Norris and Piastri, who are riding a wave, will not let him return to the winner’s circle lightly, which promises another fantastic day of racing.
