The Washington Commanders plan to continue filtering through Ron Rivera’s former draft picks before Tuesday’s final cuts deadline.
Next up could be another former first-round pick in Rivera.
After trading away another former first-round pick, linebacker Jamin Davis could be on the roster as the new regime led by Dan Quinn revamps the program.
Kristopher Knox Bleacher Report agrees, citing Davis as one of the 12 biggest names likely to be let go:
“However, Davis has struggled to find a role after the offseason additions of Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu. The Commanders are now trying to turn him into a pure edge rusher, a process the Kentucky product seems to be enjoying.”
But earlier rumors that Davis was expected to excel on special teams spoke volumes about his status on the roster as he also underwent a position change this summer.
With Jahan Dotson, the fact that he was rotating with the first-team offense didn’t stop him from being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, with Quinn and company acquiring forward-looking draft picks.
So with Davis, a complete position change and special teams role is notable. And while it seems obvious that the 2021 19th overall pick could be cut, that might not stop another team that thinks he fits a scheme well from picking up the phone and calling for a trade.
Anyway, Davis’ lack of production and the fact that Washington can count on other names like Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen to pass-rush means his brief tenure with the Commanders could be over.
