The New Orleans Saints appear to have something really, really hot in the works with rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler.
But what if a superstar quarterback was available next season?
This is a question asked by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk recently, looking at the overall and developing situation between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.
Florio writes that Prescott would be foolish not to check out his options in free agency and ranks the Saints as fifth on his “radar” when it comes to the superstar passer:
“Derek Carr is in his second year of contract with the Saints. The Saints can easily get out of him after 2024.
And Dak grew up in Louisiana.
This is a game to watch, especially if Carr and the Saints don’t make the playoffs this season.
Fans might instinctively say that this is a ridiculous idea… but this is the Saints. The organization simply refuses to take legitimate, drastic rebuilding measures, hence the low mood heading into a new season with Dennis Allen as head coach and Derrick Carr as head coach. $62 million dead cap charge as fans promote mid-round rookie on the sidelines.
It would be entirely in character for the Saints to use the opt-out built into Carr’s contract and then sign Prescott, who will play in 2024 on a $55 million salary cap with a no-tag clause and would earn more on the open market.
How would that play out? Prescott is just 31, has completed 67 percent of his passes in his career and has thrown 202 assists against 74 interceptions. The quarterback position is the most important thing in the NFL, but he would be asked to lead a fairly significant rebuild, potentially under a new head coach.
So who knows? But unless the Saints defy the odds and win a lot of games early in the season, they’ll continue to appear on lists like this.
