Netflix’s political drama The Diplomat returns in October with Season 2, bringing with it former West Wing actress Allison Janney.
Janney is a surprise addition to the cast, officially revealed in the first teaser for The Diplomat season 2. According to information released by Netflix, Janney will play the new Vice President, Grace Hill.
Interestingly, Janney is not credited as a new cast member but rather as a guest star. It is confirmed that she will appear throughout the season, but not in how many episodes she will appear.
Janney is best known for her appearances throughout all seven seasons of The West Wing. She played C.J. Cregg, the no-nonsense press secretary in the Bartlet administration who rises through the ranks to become chief of staff after Leo McGarry’s departure.
Janney’s casting reunites her with The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn, who served as creator and executive producer for the last four seasons of The West Wing.
The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a fictional American ambassador to the United Kingdom, and focuses on both the turmoil of her new role and her difficult marriage to a former ambassador, Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell.
Season 1 ended with a shocking explosion that nearly killed Hal, but Netflix’s press release confirms that he will survive the ordeal as the two work together to identify a government insider who tried to kill Kate.
The Diplomat season 2 will premiere on Netflix on October 31, 2024. In the meantime, check out our guide to the best new movies to stream this month, the best new TV shows to stream this month, and all the new documentaries and crime thrillers available.
