Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in the works! We have all the latest information on the potential release date, who will star alongside Adam Sandler this time around, and what the story could entail.
That’s right, one of Adam Sandler’s best films is getting a sequel, nearly 30 years later. Happy Gilmore 2 has been greenlit, and Netflix is continuing its collaboration with the actor to bring this new film to life.
Sandler has long spoken of his hopes to revisit this incredible sports movie for another story. Now, he (and fans) can really start getting excited.
Now that Happy Gilmore 2 is confirmed, here’s everything we know so far. Plus, we’ve even thrown in a few ideas we’d love to see come to fruition.
Is there a release date for Happy Gilmore 2?
Happy Gilmore 2 does not have a release date at this time.
Good news though: Netflix confirmed on September 9, 2024 that filming for Happy Gilmore 2 has begun.
The streamer posted the news alongside an image of Happy’s signature jersey.
On the Dan Patrick show, Sandler confirmed that the film is in the works with screenwriter Tim Herlihy. Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald revealed that he had been sent the script and described it as “awesome.”
Netflix already has announcement Happy Gilmore 2 will be released on the streaming service, but it’s not yet known exactly when. If we had to make an educated guess, we’d have the movie for 2026, given that the script could still need some tweaking and taking into account the production process.
What is Happy Gilmore 2 about?
There is no official plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 at the moment, as the project is still in early development.
Universal
The first movie ended on a positive note, with no loose ends to tie up. Happy managed to win the Tour Championship and beat Shooter, he got the girl, and he saved his grandmother’s house.
What we do know is that it’s very likely that Happy and Shooter will face off again in some way. In fact, fans of the first movie have a few ideas about this, and they involve the new generation of the Gilmore family.
On Reddit, fans speculated that it would be fun to see Gilmore’s daughter (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter) become an LPGA Tour pro, and have Shooter’s daughter be her main rival.
It would be even funnier if Gilmore’s daughter struggled with golf and turned to hockey instead, becoming a sensation in the sport thanks to her father’s lucky swing. The catch is that Shooter McGavin raised his daughter to play hockey instead of golf, and she ends up being supplanted by a Gilmore again.
It remains to be seen whether the story will focus entirely on Sandler’s character, or if he will attempt to pass the baton to a younger cast.
Who is in the cast of Happy Gilmore 2?
One person we are sure will be in the casting is Adam Sandler as the main character.
Universal
Sandler has yet to confirm whether any of the original cast members will return for the sequel. However, the fact that Christopher McDonald has been handed the script suggests that he will have a role as Shooter McGavin.
Other actors, such as Julie Bowen, remain unclear to this day. She has already played the role of Virginia, the public relations agent in charge of the tour. Her character falls in love with Happy and they stay together until the end of the film. Happy Gilmore 2 could bring back the character in the role of Happy’s wife (or ex-wife, for more drama).
The stars of the first film, including Carl Weathers, Richard Kiel and Bob Barker, have since passed away. Weathers played Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, the professional golfer who lost his hand to an alligator and who had trained Happy. Kiel played Mr. Larson, Happy’s former employee.
Fans can only hope that Sandler pays tribute to Frances Bay, who played Happy’s loving grandmother. The actress passed away in 2011 at the age of 92.
Sandler will be joined by Benny Safdie, in a role that has yet to be revealed. The director-turned-actor previously worked with Sandler on Uncut Gems. He has since starred in Oppenheimer and Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret?
Paige Spiranac, a professional golfer, has been heavily tipped for a role in the film. Fans of the golf influencer have been clamoring for her to get a role in the film, and she has even hinted that she is open to getting involved as well.
The latest rumor going around is that Travis Kelce, famous NFL player and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, could be making an appearance in the film. Kelce is currently busy with acting roles, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see this possibility come to fruition.
