The match between Bournemouth and Chelsea on 14 September 2024 set the record for the most yellow cards, as 14 players were shown on the Vitality Stadium pitch, plus one for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Incredibly, despite all the cautions handed out, no players were sent off and the match ended 11-11.
At the final whistle, the fans were left perplexed as the game did not appear to be a dirty game. Neither team felt like they were playing with an extra needle, on the contrary, referee Anthony Taylor was quick to caution the players, particularly the many individuals booked for dissent.
The match broke the old record set two days earlier, exactly one year before, when Tottenham and Sheffield United were given a combined 13 yellow cards by referee Peter Bankes. Interestingly, this match contributed greatly to the record number of yellow cards in a single day of action in the Premier League with 44 distributed in total.
Most yellow cards in a Premier League season
Discipline has been an issue for Chelsea in recent years as they broke the record for players booked in a Premier League season with 105 yellow cards issued during the 2023/24 campaign.
However, the Blues have not had a player among the highest recipients of individual cautions in Premier League history.
