Tottenham Hotspur may have had a difficult start to the season, but Alan Shearer has a clear message: their big signing Dominic Solanke needs serious help, and fast.
After a massive £65 million ($86 million) move from Bournemouth, Solanke has yet to find the back of the net for Spurs, and fans are starting to get impatient.
Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer, knows all too well how difficult it can be for a struggling striker.
“Once Solanke gets his first goal it will be a huge relief,” Shearer said, adding: “It doesn’t matter how it happens, he just needs one to get going.”
Which Spurs stars need to step up to help Solanke?
With Solanke still finding his feet, Shearer believes it is up to Spurs’ key players like Heung-min Son, James Maddison and Brennan Johnson to carry the weight in the meantime.
Inasmuch as Betfair Ambassador Shearer said: “Maddison and Son need to take more responsibility while Solanke is not yet at full speed.” He is confident the goals will come, but it won’t hurt if Solanke’s team-mates chip in with a bit of magic.
The former England captain also backed head coach Ange Postecoglou, urging Spurs to stick with him despite the difficult start to the campaign.
Postecoglou’s tactics, which include a high defensive line and an attacking full-back system, have attracted some criticism, but Shearer says patience is key. “Ange’s style worked wonders last season, and he will do wonders again,” he assured fans.
With Tottenham still searching for their rhythm, Shearer’s advice could well be the key to turning the tide.
