It’s only been three weeks, but San Francisco 49ers fans are already experiencing some panic at the start of the 2024 season.
The 49ers are 1-2, a surprisingly slow start for a team that just won a conference championship a season ago. They also lost Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, All-Pros Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, and standout defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to injuries.
If those issues weren’t enough, the 49ers also have a salary crisis on the horizon. Quarterback Brock Purdy will be eligible for an extension at the end of the year, and if San Francisco chooses to pay him a higher salary, other talented players will likely have to leave.
Money launderers report NFL Scouting Department seems to think this scenario is inevitable. They predicted that All-Pro and 2023 Pro Bowl cornerback Charvarius Ward would sign with the Washington Commanders in 2025.
“While the Commanders have some young talent at cornerback, the position group is a weakness because it lacks experience,” the authors said. “The seven-year pro could step in and be a mentor within the position group.”
“Ward will be an expensive acquisition, but Adam Peters, who was assistant general manager of the 49ers when the club signed the cornerback in 2022, is expected to have more than $120 million in cap space to work with, according to Over The Cap .”
Ward showed promise early in his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, but he broke out in 2023 with a performance of five interceptions and 23 passes defended. He was the anchor of a 49ers secondary that lost All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga to injury, and this year he assumed the CB1 role from day one.
Now 28, Ward has plenty of good seasons left, and a team like Washington could greatly benefit from adding a top defender while their rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels, still has a contract affordable.
It’s the life cycle of the NFL: build the best possible team around the young QB until he becomes too expensive. The 49ers have been on the positive side of it for a few years, but soon they may have to experience it from the other side of the spectrum.
