The Detroit Lions have been busy taking care of their own in 2024, and they did that once again on Tuesday evening, this time with defensive lineman Alim McNeill.
According to McNeill’s agent, he is signing a four-year contract extension with the Lions. The financial terms of the deal have since been disclosed, and they are significant, as you’d expect.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the contract is worth $97 million, with $55 million guaranteed. That works out to an annual average of $24.25 million, which ranks fourth among interior defensive linemen, per Over the Cap.
The extension for McNeill is well-deserved. He had a breakout year in 2023, tallying five sacks, six tackles for loss and 10 QB hits in 13 games. He is in the midst of another strong year in 2024, with the NC State product tallying 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss and four QB hits in five games.
McNeill is the third homegrown Lions player from the 2021 draft class to get an extension this year, as right tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown were also inked to extensions during the offseason.
The Lions also took care of quarterback Jared Goff, left tackle Taylor Decker and running back David Montgomery with contract extensions.

The Lions will return to action in Week 7 when they take on the Minnesota Vikings in a battle for first place.
