Fantasy football managers were hoping that the Pittsburgh Steelers change at the quarterback position from Justin Fields to Russell Wilson would yield better results for tight end Pat Freiermuth, but so far that hasn’t happened during the Week 7 game against the New York Jets.
The Steelers’ passing attack struggled mightily with Fields, who was good enough to get Pittsburgh to 4-2 but didn’t play at a high enough level to cement the job, leading to Wilson getting the ball in Week 7. As a result of Fields’ ineffectiveness as a passer, Freiermuth wasn’t very productive over the first six games.
However, through the first quarter of Sunday night’s game, Freiermuth has been quiet and he’s not off to the start many were hoping for. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on.
Is Pat Freiermuth playing tonight?
Through the first quarter of the Sunday night game between the Steelers and Jets, the Steelers tight end has been quiet. He didn’t record a single catch and Wilson only targeted Freiermuth once over the opening 15 minutes.
There could be many things at play here. First, Wilson hasn’t played a regular season game since last year, so he’s going to need to shake off some rust in his 2024 debut.
Adding to that, Wilson and Freiermuth haven’t had a lot of reps together, so they may not have good chemistry at the moment. Wilson had one drive during the preseason and he missed a ton of practice time during the offseason and early on during the regular season, so he doesn’t have much experience with Freiermuth.
Things should get better for Wilson and Freiermuth moving forward, it’s just going to take some time for them to get on the same page. Whether that happens in Week 7 remains to be seen.
