According to reports via The Mail, his loyalty to his old club, Liverpool, made him reluctant to take over at their rivals, United. The club eventually decided to stick with Erik ten Hag, extending his contract.
However, Alonso’s success at Leverkusen hasn’t gone unnoticed. Under his guidance, the team has made an impressive start in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
Manchester City are now reportedly keeping a close eye on Alonso as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola if the Spaniard leaves the Etihad Stadium. With Alonso’s previous experience playing under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, some believe he could be a perfect fit.
