The 2023 Ballon d’Or saw Lionel Messi clinch his eighth award in the trophy’s history as old rival Cristiano Ronaldo failed to receive a nomination.
The lack of Ronaldo up against Messi marked a huge change, and the 2024 award went one step further, with neither player nominated for the first time since 2003.
A combined 13 wins between them demonstrates their incredible dominance of the award but 2024 signalled a concrete end of their Ballon d’Or duopoly.
Ronaldo received 19 consecutive Ballon d’Or nominations and found his way onto the shortlist every single year from the age of 19 through to 37, but it would seem that his exploits in Saudi Arabia are no longer sufficient to keep him in the reckoning.

Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr to play in the Saudi Pro League at the start of 2022, having started the 2022/23 season at Manchester United before a public falling-out with former manager Erik ten Hag.
However, that did not count sufficiently to get him in the running to win in 2023, or again in 2024, as he was missed off the final 30-man shortlist.
