The Miami Heat have been one of the busiest teams this season in mock trades and hypothetical NBA rumors. All signs point towards Jimmy Butler singing elsewhere this offseason, which means the Heat will be desperate to get any sort of return for him. Most mock trades have the Heat losing talent and rebuilding around Bam Adebayo, but the Heat could go all-in on one last run.
Should Miami find postseason success this year, it might encourage the 35-year-old Butler to stay in town. If he believes he can bring a title to South Beach, he will certainly patch things up with Pat Riley and work on winning. However, last year’s early exit suggests that this team simply can’t compete.
However, recent rumors point towards the Heat bringing in a player who can impact winning for not much of a return. Malcolm Brogdon is yet to suit up for the Washington Wizards this season, but he is a solid two-way guard who can play well on both sides of the ball, hit some shots, and come off the bench or lead the starting unit.
“Malcolm Brogdon seems like a natural candidate that could make sense for the Heat,” wrote FanSided’s Michael Saenz on Sunday. “He’s managed to fit at every stop of his career and could play multiple positions and roles for Miami. He has a knack for just fitting in. While he may not be an elite defender at this point in his career anymore, I can’t imagine he’d be worse than what the Heat already has at the position.”
The Wizards, desperate to rebuild around Bilal Coulibaly and Alexandre Sarr, wouldn’t ask for too much for Brogdon. Matching salary would be tough, but if the Heat parted ways with Terry Rozier, that obstacle could easily be overcome. Toss in a protected draft pick, and the Heat could get the trade done. Brogdon is a better defender, shooter and passer than Rozier, so the Heat could upgrade their backcourt with ease.
