The Chicago Bulls are set to honor one of the city’s most iconic athletes of all time.
Derrick Rose is getting his uniform retired by the Bulls, as reported by ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania.
“The Chicago Bulls will retire Derrick Rose’s No. 1 jersey in the rafters next season, ESPN has learned,” Charania posted to X on Saturday morning.
“Rose, a Chicago native, played eight seasons with the Bulls, becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history, and is now being honored as a fabric of the organization.”
Rose also won Rookie of the Year in 2009 with the Bulls after being selected No. 1 overall out of Memphis in the 2008 NBA draft.
Rose was 22 years and 7 months old when he was named league MVP in 2011.
He led Chicago to an Eastern Conference Finals that season, where the Bulls fell to a LeBron James-led Miami Heat squad 4-1.
Rose tore his left ACL during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first round in 2012.
Rose missed the entire 2012-13 season and then tore his right meniscus after appearing in just 10 games in 2013-14, once again ending his season.
Rose returned to the playoffs with the Bulls in 2015, but Chicago was eliminated by the James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 6 games.
The Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks in June 2016. He had stints with the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, and Cavaliers before announcing his retirement on September 26, 2024.
