Cristiano Ronaldo’s high-profile move to Saudi Arabia continues to stir conversations, with former Portugal coach Fernando Santos offering a fresh perspective.
Santos, who guided Portugal to their historic European Championship win in 2016, applauded Ronaldo for his decision to join Al Nassr, calling it a strategic and “incredible decision” that secures his future.
The 39-year-old superstar transitioned to the Saudi Pro League in 2023, leaving behind a glittering career in Europe with clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
While critics questioned the move, Santos defended Ronaldo’s choice, emphasizing the quality of Saudi football.
Speaking on Egyptian Channel 1 (via O Jogo), Santos boldly stated: “Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr is an incredible decision, but it is a unique experience, and Al Nassr is no different to European clubs. The atmosphere in Saudi football is wonderful. Cristiano is a world-class player and was looking to secure his future.”

Ronaldo, never shy of expressing his views, recently reignited debate with comments during the Globe Soccer Awards. The Portuguese forward compared the Saudi Pro League favorably to France’s top league.
“The Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1, of course. I’m not saying that because I play here. I don’t care what people think about it. Players should come here and they will see quickly. Just try to do sprints at 38, 39, 40 degrees [Celsius]… Come and you will see.”
He also criticized Ligue 1’s lack of competition, saying: “In France, they only have PSG, everyone else is finished. Nobody can beat them because they have the most money and the best players.”
As Ronaldo gears up for the return of the Saudi Pro League following a month-long break, his influence in Saudi football continues to grow, both on and off the field.
