The 2025 NFL Draft will start on Thursday, April 24. One player that isn’t expected to have to wait long to hear his name called is Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter.
The reigning Heisman winner made headlines during his time with the Buffaloes because he played on both sides of the ball. Hunter would line up at cornerback but would also play wide receiver. It is rare for a player to play both sides of the ball, and NFL teams have been asked how they view Hunter at the next level.
Most teams have said that they view him as a cornerback, but that he has also upside at wide receiver. Obviously the concern about playing both sides of the ball is that that increases the chances that he would get hurt, so it makes sense why an NFL team would be hesitant to be okay with him being a full-time player on both sides of the ball with the investment that they are going to have to make taking Hunter with a high draft pick.

Hunter has been adamant that he wants to play both sides of the ball at the next level, and has issued almost an ultimatum to teams with how he views the situation.

Hunter was listed as a cornerback at the 2025 NFL Combine, but went through wide receiver drills at Colorado’s pro day. The Buffaloes always listed Hunter as an athlete on the roster, and the soon-to-be rookie has always indicated he wants to play both sides of the ball.
Hunter did a recent interview with CBS Sports leading into the 2025 NFL Draft. He indicated that all of the teams he has talked to are okay with him playing both sides of the ball, and the versatile player has said that is a non-negotiable deal-breaker and went as far to make a pretty stark statement if a team only lets him play one side of the ball.
“It’s never playing football again. Because I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it. I just feel very confident in myself, and I got a competitive spirit that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I feel like I can do it.”
His head coach at Colorado, Deion Sanders, might be a little biased, but he is convinced that Hunter could pull off both positions, like how Sanders did during his career.
“The NFL is a slow game. You huddle (every play). How is the contact nowadays? Minimal. That game is more conducive to him being successful than a college game. College is tempo, tempo, tempo. Now, you’re talking about you have to be in shape. Pros, how many seconds between plays? Please, he’s going to go jogging after the darn game because he’s going to have all that energy man. He is built for this.”
What position does Travis Hunter play?
It depends on whom you ask.
Hunter will tell you that he is a cornerback and a wide receiver, and his numbers at Colorado support that. The reigning Heisman winner is the first player since 1978 with 1,000 receiving yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions in the same season.
NFL teams were asked at the 2025 NFL Combine how they viewed Hunter, and most teams just went with the cornerback answer since he was listed as one in the official Combine guide. Titans coach Brian Callahan said that Hunter would primarily be a cornerback, while Browns GM Andrew Berry called him primarily a receiver.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said, “to say that you’re going to be completely immersed in everything that there is to know on offense and everything there is to know on defense—I don’t know if there’s enough hours in the day for a player to be able to do that and have every detail locked down.” He said he expects Hunter to play fully on one side of the ball and to have a package of a few plays on the other. Baltimore GM Eric DeCosta said, “we would probably want to put him at one position.”

What Travis Hunter has said about his NFL position
Hunter is adamant that he will play both sides of the ball. If he had his way, he would be 100% of snaps on both offense and defense and thinks that because the NFL “has more breaks,” he would be able to manage the workload and get sufficient rest.
He added at the Combine that it isn’t his job to figure out how to ball both, just that he wants to play both.
“They say, ‘nobody has ever done it the way I do it.’ I tell them, ‘I’m just different.’”
