For fashionistas, the month of May signals the arrival of the industry’s most important night: the Met Gala. And this year, a famous athlete made the cover of Vogue in celebration of the famous fashion event.

Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton smolders as he suits up in a dapper Ferragamo suit and bowtie, dripping in Tiffany & Co. accessories.

“I always wanted to go to the Met Gala, and I got invited for the first time in 2015,” he writes in his May cover story in Vogue. “It’s always been a privilege to attend, but in 2021, I no longer wanted to just be another person in the room.” He ended up buying an entire table and inviting some emerging Black designers to sit with him and famed stylist Law Roach.

This year, the event’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The Met issue featured all Black cover models – including A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo and Pharrell Williams.

Athletes now get attention for their “arrival look” to big events (see LeBron James’ recent overalls or Travis Kelce’s oversized ‘70s vibe he wore to the 2025 Super Bowl). Hamilton, 40, did his part to pioneer this freedom of expression before athletes put on their uniforms.

“When I first signed with F1 I was only allowed to wear suits and team kits, and it was horrible,” he writes. “I didn’t feel comfortable, and I didn’t feel like I was able to be myself. Eventually, I had the courage to push beyond those boundaries and say, ‘Look, I want to turn up to the track in what I want to wear. I’m here now—you can’t get rid of me or change the way I dress.’”

The British race car driver says the pushback was “massive,” but soon “other drivers started doing the same thing.”

This year’s Met Gala will be May 5, and coincides with the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition curated by Monica L. Miller.
