The Minnesota Timberwolves have become a power of the Western Conference with Anthony Edwards at the helm, but they seem like they can’t get over the hump. Edwards needs help, and there may be a perfect player to provide it.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes that the player would be Atlanta Hawks four-time All-Star Trae Young. Young would be Edwards’ first true superstar teammate and would elevate both of their games.
“The Minnesota Timberwolves’ 24-point loss to Atlanta on New Year’s Eve saw Anthony Edwards storm to the locker room in frustration with seven minutes left in the game. This Wolves team still very much has the bones of a contender, with Ant as its superstar spine, but it’s becoming harder to trust the pieces around him…The Wolves can also give Young his first true superstar running mate in Edwards, forcing Young into a less central role. More spot-up 3s, more off-ball gravity and calculated, streamlined attacks — that should benefit Young tremendously, assuming he buys in,” Cassels wrote.
This season, Young is averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists, 1.5 assists, and one steal in 28 minutes per game. Due to injury, though, he’s only played in 10 games this season.
This isn’t his norm, however, as Young has career averages of 25.2 points, 9.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and one steal per game. Also, he’s never played less than 54 games in the seven seasons he’s played prior to this one.
Having a backcourt of Edwards and Young would be terrifying. Whether it be them raining threes or using acrobatics to drive to the basket, they would be borderline unstoppable. Hopefully, Minnesota realizes this and gets dialing ASAP.
