The New York Jets have found their quarterback for 2026, and it’s a familiar name.

The Jets and Las Vegas Raiders have agreed to a deal that sends Geno Smith to New York for his second stint with the organization. Smith was a second-round draft pick by the Jets in 2013 and played four seasons with the team.

New York needs to completely remake its quarterback room this offseason, so Smith is the start of that process. The veteran had a disappointing year in 2025, but still offers the Jets a capable starter for the 2026 season.

Here’s a look at the Geno Smith trade that sends the quarterback to New York.

The Jets are acquiring Geno Smith from the Raiders for a pick swap, as the Raiders will move up from the seventh round to the sixth round in this year’s draft. Geno Smith contract

Smith signed a two-year, $75 million extension with the Raiders last year, which meant he was entering the final year of the deal this season. Instead of releasing him, Las Vegas is paying the bulk of Smith’s remaining contract to trade him to the Jets, allowing the Jets to take on minimal money.

Smith and the Jets agreed to rework the contract to make the trade go through, pleasing all parties involved. New York owes Smith around $1.3 million of his $37 million salary this year.
