The Los Angeles Lakers were right on the verge of legitimately contending for an NBA Championship. LeBron James has made it clear since the summer that he wants to finish his career on a contending team.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
Now, with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sidelined, things have become much more difficult in Los Angeles. If the Lakers want to finish the regular season strong, they will have to rely heavily on Deandre Ayton.
“If Ayton proves that he can thrive in a consistently featured offensive role, then those who have written him off as a player on the outskirts of career stability will be proven wrong. He could either accept his player option or enter free agency in 2026 with a healthier narrative following him and an opportunity for a multi-year contract presented to him. It’s a high-pressure situation, but if Ayton is up to the task, then he could help save the Lakers’ season and change his career trajectory in one fell swoop,” Lake Show Life’s Maxwell Ogden wrote.
Ayton is not expected to return next season, and a potential replacement could be Isaiah Hartenstein of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“The Thunder center does so many good things on the court that Doncic would love. Hartenstein is a good screener and should be a solid pick-and-roll partner for Luka. The veteran big man also crashes the boards hard, and can even create extra opportunities with his offensive rebounding. Plus, Hartenstein is a capable option to have as the defensive stronghold at center. Deandre Ayton continues to prove time and time again that a long-term partnership with the Lakers does not make sense for the team. The moments of optimism with the former first overall pick are typically followed with the usual frustration that can be expected from the Ayton experience,” Lake Show Life’s Syvatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.
The Lakers will be looking to make additions this summer, and Hartenstein would be a significant pickup for the organization. Not only that, but he would fit extremely well alongside Doncic.
Hartenstein is on an $87 million contract with the Thunder, who could look to shed salary this offseason. Ayton has been inconsistent in Los Angeles, and the Lakers understand the need for a more reliable option moving forward.
