As expected, Philadelphia Eagles standout wide receiver A.J. Brown is dominating trade rumors in late-May.
The 28-year-old Super Bowl champion is likely less than two weeks away from getting traded to a different contender, making it unsurprising that all eyes are on him. However, there’s a former Eagles contributor who could also receive ample attention on the trade market sooner rather than later.
Specifically, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox is a firm believer that the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and the New England Patriots should be interested in acquiring an ex-Eagles star edge rusher to patch up their respective defenses.
“The Lions have tried to reload their edge rotation this offseason,” Knox wrote Monday. “They signed Payton Turner and D.J. Wonnum before drafting Derrick Moore in Round 2. However, none of them are as proven at the NFL level as Sweat is. Adding Sweat would give Detroit the sort of dependable edge presence it has lacked opposite (Aidan) Hutchinson.”
“He’d be an ideal replacement for (Al-Quadin) Muhammad and would help the Lions tremendously in their quest to return to the postseason in 2026. There are several reasons why the Green Bay Packers should be interested in adding Sweat if he becomes available. The first is the reality that star edge-rusher Micah Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL and might not be at 100% to start the season.”
“While the Patriots are busy monitoring things with Brown, they should also have an eye on Sweat. While New England made a stunning push to Super Bowl LX this past season, it didn’t exactly benefit from an elite pass rush. The Patriots’ defense recorded just 34 sacks, 7.5 of which came from K’Lavon Chaisson, who is now with the Washington Commanders.”
The Lions and Packers probably make the most sense for Sweat out of the three franchises mentioned, but the Patriots would be an intriguing fit. New England finished the 2025-26 campaign with a 35% win rate (ranking 19th in the NFL, according to ESPN analytics) to go along with a mediocre sack total.
Sweat, who recorded 12 sacks with the Arizona Cardinals last year and an 18% pass-rush win rate (which ranked ninth among edge rushers), would help give the Patriots’ defense the boost they need heading into a season with high expectations.
Expect Sweat to be a hot commodity on the edge-rushing trade market in the foreseeable future.
