Argentina’s bid to become just the third side to retain the World Cup continues with a quarterfinal clash against Switzerland in Kansas City.

After a cakewalk through the group stage, La Albiceleste has been involved in two of the games of the tournament, somehow following up its 3-2 win over Cape Verde with an even more dramatic victory over Egypt by the same score.

The champions came from two down with 11 minutes to go in chaotic and highly controversial manner with claims of favoritism rife in the days to follow.

The Swiss will look to knock them off and make a first-ever World Cup semifinal. They have already made history by winning two knockout games for the first time and come into this game off the back of success on penalties over South American opposition in Colombia.

Argentina vs. Switzerland prediction

Argentina has majorly ridden its luck in the knockout stages with both Cape Verde and Egypt coming so close to knocking it out of the tournament.

On paper, Switzerland is a better side than either of those countries and has been extremely solid, conceding just three goals in five games and keeping clean sheets in both knockout wins.

The Swiss might just be the team to oust Lionel Messi and the champions, who are surely feeling the effects of their chaotic recent games. The Swiss are unbeaten in their last 10 competitive internationals.

Prediction: Switzerland 2, Argentina 1

Argentina vs. Switzerland best bets

Both teams to score (+108 at FanDuel)

With a 2-1 scoreline, this is an obvious place to start.

While Switzerland’s two knockout games have seen it keep back-to-back clean sheets, don’t expect it to extend that run.

Argentina has been involved in two incredible end-to-end clashes and has scored at least twice in all five of its matches.

Let’s hope for another thriller here. FanDuel has the best odds for this bet.

Over 2.5 goals (+120 at DraftKings)

With a predicted three goals, this is our next stop.

All but one of Argentina’s five games have had over 2.5 goals, and there’s been five in both of its knockout games.

The Swiss stuck four past Bosnia in the groups, which shows they can be prolific on occasion.

Granit Xhaka to score anytime (+1300 at Fanatics)

While Messi has now scored in a remarkable nine consecutive World Cup games, it might be time for another No.10 to step up.

Xhaka is the man for Switzerland but has not yet truly had his moment at this summer’s tournament, albeit he did score in the shootout win over Colombia.

This might just be his and the Swiss’ night.
