The injury crisis at Tottenham has reached such an extreme and absurd state that manager Ange Postecoglou seems to have no other choice but to laugh.
That’s exactly what he did during the second half of Spurs’ 3-0 victory over Swedish side Elfsborg to close out league phase play in the Europa League.
Three goals in the final 20 minutes of the match secured the points and saw Spurs clinch a top four spot in the table, sealing not only a Round of 16 bye but one of the top seeded positions in the knockout draw as well.
Yet their injury worries, which are already at ridiculous levels, deepened further during the game as they saw yet another defender fall victim to a fitness concern.
With Micky van de Ven only just returning from a long-term hamstring problem and only fit enough to handle the first 45 minutes, he was replaced by fellow center-back Radu Dragusin at the break. Yet after just 20 minutes, Dragusin himself had succumbed to a knee injury, and while he tried to re-enter the field of play and carry on, it was immediately clear he could not.
Dragusin’s replacement, 20-year-old Dane Scarlett, would end up breaking the deadlock just four minutes after entering, scoring his first goal for the club with an impressive header, but the wider consequences of the injury were already clear.
Having returned from his loan at Oldham this January, Scarlett had hoped to find a new home to get regular minutes through the second half of the season. Yet after being forced onto the pitch after Dragusin’s injury, he can no longer do so and must stay at Spurs as the FA’s rules state a player cannot be registered for three different clubs in the same season.
After seeing another player added to the already astonishing injury list and scuppering a potential loan move in the process, it was all a bit much for Postecoglou. In the moment, he could do nothing but crack a joke at his own team’s expense.

As the ball came towards the Spurs manager on the touchline and out of play, Postecoglou reached for the ball and controlled it to assist in the ensuing throw-in. While walking back to his technical area, he playfully grabbed his own hamstring in a funny display of self-deprecating humor.
Postecoglou may have just been cracking a joke about his own athletic state, but given the astonishing injury list at the club and the recent Dragusin sub, it was hard not to link the two. He even addressed it jokingly after the match, spinning the humorous moment into a positive take on the evening at large.
“I nearly did my hamstring mate, did you see that?” Postecoglou told reporters in the post-match press conference. “To be fair, if I do it doesn’t really matter. But yeah you’ve still got to enjoy it. It was a great night for the club, it was a great story to tell. There aren’t many European nights when three homegrown products get on the scoresheet.”
Spurs must now await the results of the Europa League knockout stage draw, and then sit by as two playoff-bound clubs battle it out for the right to meet them in the Round of 16.
