Read receipts let the sender know that their message has been delivered and read. These notifications will appear within the messaging app in one way or another.
Users who prefer to monitor their messages will benefit from read receipts; However, others choose to disable their read receipts to maintain some anonymity when sending messages.
So how do you know if someone disables your read receipts?
The answer to this question varies depending on the type of courier service used. Continue reading to learn how to use read receipts in a variety of the most popular messaging apps available.
How to tell if someone has disabled your read receipts
Most major messaging platforms have a read receipt feature, but not all make it easy to turn off this feature or know if someone has turned it off.
Here’s how to use read receipts in some of the most used messaging apps.
iMessage
iMessage enables read receipts by default, but allows users to customize their read receipts. If you send a text message via iMessage to another iPhone, you’ll see the blue bubble in the chat window. Below, you’ll see the status marked “Sent,” “Delivered,” or “Read.”

iMessage settings allow users to turn on read receipts for certain contacts and keep them off for others. Assuming you only see the word “Delivered” in gray below the message you sent, the recipient has disabled their read receipts.
If the bubble is green, it means the recipient is not using an iPhone, which means read receipts won’t work. Android and iOS don’t share read receipts by default, so you won’t receive any feedback when you text your AndroidOS friends.

Messages (Android)
One of the newest features on Android phones is Rich Communication Services (RCS). This feature allows Android users to view read receipts, similar to Apple’s iPhone. However, unlike iOS, AndroidOS does not have color-coded texts depending on the operating system. The lack of color coding will make it more difficult for Android users to determine if someone has their read receipts disabled or if they are using an iPhone.
Assuming you are using the RCS feature, you will be able to see others’ read receipts and they will be able to see yours. But older Androids don’t have that feature.
If another user enabled read receipts, you will receive comments such as “Sent”, “Delivered”, and “Read”, as shown below.

Read receipts can be turned off in Chat settings in Messages. If someone has disabled read receipts, comments will not appear next to messages.
Sign
Signal shows message statuses by default, although you can turn them off if you wish.
A single check mark shows that the message was received by the Signal server. Two check marks mean it has been delivered to the recipient. When those two checkmarks turn blue, it means the recipient has read your message.

If the checkmarks do not turn blue, they may have disabled read receipts.
WhatsApp also uses the checkmark system to display the status of the message. Like Signal, you can also turn off read receipts if you want.
A gray check mark means your message has been sent. Two gray check marks mean it was delivered. Two blue check marks mean the message has been read. You can long press the message to see what time it was read if you really need to.

If both check marks remain gray, the recipient may have disabled read receipts.
Facebook Messenger
Facebook Messenger Read Receipts work very similar to the other messaging apps mentioned. Facebook Messenger use circles.
A blue circle means your message is being sent. A blue circle with a check mark means it was submitted successfully. A filled blue circle with a check mark means it has been delivered. A profile photo below the message means it has been read.
Facebook doesn’t give users the option to turn off receipt reading from within the app, but there are solutions if you want to keep your message reading activities anonymous. Read our article on disable read receipts in Messenger.
Telegram
Telegram also provides read receipts by default and allows you to disable them. A single green check mark means the message has been received, while two green check marks indicate your message has been read.
The recipient may have disabled read receipts if they don’t see the second green check mark.
Instagram DMs have a very simple read receipt system. If your message has been opened, the word “Viewed” will appear below the message. If you’re in a conversation with multiple people, an eye icon and the Instagram name of the person who viewed your message will appear.
The recipient may have disabled read receipts if they don’t see the “Seen” text or the eye icon. Try sending the person a DM. If they reply and you never saw the “Seen” comment, they will have disabled your read receipts.
snapchat
On Snapchat, when your message arrives in your caller’s inbox, the word “Delivered” will appear in the app. Once they have opened the message, it will read “Open.”

Snapchat doesn’t let you turn off the ability to see if a Snap or message is open, so if you don’t want to use a platform with read receipts, don’t use Snapchat.
On the other hand, if you want to communicate with someone who doesn’t like read receipts but does have Snapchat, you’ll know for sure when they open your message within Snapchat.
LinkedIn offers users the option to turn off read receipts. Once a message is read, the recipient’s profile photo will appear below the message. If this profile picture is not displayed, but the person responded, it is likely that their read receipts have been disabled.

Tik Tok
TikTok recently introduced read receipts to its messaging service. Fortunately, users can choose to participate or not. However, if you turn off read receipts on TikTok, you won’t be able to see the other person’s receipts either.

But, if you have read receipts turned on (and they do too), you’ll be able to see when the recipient opens your message.

On most platforms, no. But iOS allows users to see other people’s read receipts even if their own are disabled.
Final thoughts
Read receipts are useful for those who want to ensure they receive a notification when their messages have been read. They verify the delivery and put your mind at ease. They make you responsible for responding and maintaining dialogue with the other person. These notifications can encourage us to maintain relationships with others and discourage us from becoming hermits and not interacting with others.
However, many users prefer to disable read receipts to maintain some privacy and have less responsibility for responding in a timely manner. If you want to check if one of your friends has turned off read receipts, the easiest way to do this is to simply send a message, wait for a response, and see whether or not you receive a “Seen” notification.
