Canada Basketball and the Raptors issued a joint statement Thursday reporting that Nathan Barrett, younger brother of Toronto forward RJ, has passed away.
Nathan was only 19 years old. Like his brother RJ, he played basketball at Montverde Academy in Florida. Nathan was studying to be a pilot before he fell ill. according to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange.
The Barrett family has been embedded in Canadian basketball for decades. Long before RJ was traded to the Raptors this season, his father, Rowan, was the general manager of the Canadian Men’s National Team.
The entire country of Canada and the Raptors organization mourn the loss of Nathan Barrett.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we announce the loss of our beloved son and brother, Nathan Tyler Barrett, who passed away on Tuesday, March 12, surrounded by his family, church and friends.
“While our family is devastated by this great loss, we will continue to cherish the memories and time we spent together. Nathan was a God-fearing and strong-willed young man. He was thoughtful, kind, loving, compassionate, creative, admirable and driven.
“During this difficult time, our family would like to ask for privacy, but greatly appreciates the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have been receiving. Although his time with us was brief, he will live forever in our hearts.”

RJ has been away from the Raptors this week and will miss Friday’s game in Toronto against the Magic.
