A long-standing stance for Canelo Alvarez will be broken on May 4 when he faces Mexican contender Jaime Munguía in Las Vegas. Canelo’s status as undisputed super middleweight champion is at stake.
Canelo is a four-pision champion and only needs eleven months to unify the super middleweight pision. He began his career fighting several opponents from Mexico, but over the years, that has diminished. Recent fights include wins against Alfredo Angulo and Julio César Chávez Jr., with Chávez’s 2017 fight being his last.
He has been adamant about not fighting Mexican fighters. That has included a possible fight against David Benavidez, a shock fight that fans have requested for years. Canelo sees Munguía’s skills and mentality as reasons to break down his walls and face the Tijuana-born man.
“I said that I would not fight against a Mexican fighter but against someone respectful like Munguía, who earned his opportunity fight after fight. “It’s something that I’m glad we were able to make come true,” Canelo said via boxing scene. “I hope everyone can see that this will be great for everyone involved and for Mexico in particular.
“Munguia is a disciplined guy. It really hits hard. He can be a powerful puncher and I like challenges. I want to go after hunger [fighters] like Munguía who want to give everything in the ring and give the fans the show they deserve.”
The 33-year-old faces Munguía, 27, winner of 34 fights by knockout. Munguia, a former super welterweight champion, is coming off impressive victories against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder. The Golden Boy product looks to beat a pound-for-pound big and hold onto the gold.
